2013 - The year in review
Has it really been one year since we started this project already?
Well, technically it’s one year in February (or April), depending on when you start counting, but let’s pretend it has been one year for now, shall we?
Back in February 2013, our first project, “Fighting is Magic”, got shut down due to legal circumstances already known to you guys, and which we won’t be going into right now.
In March, we announced a new member joining the Mane 6 Devteam for our second project, a 2D fighting game that’d keep the basic foundations of what was Fighting is Magic, improve on the details, and feature an all-new, all-original new cast and universe, as designed by our newest Core Dev character designer, Lauren Faust, and the rest of Mane6.
A few days later, we announced a proposed deal with LabZero, in which, if their crowdfunding campaign reached $725k, we’d get to use their game engine. By April, we had secured use of it thanks to the donations of all people that contributed to the LabZero crowdfund (Thank you!).
Since then, we have been working on the project’s pre-production stage, inspecting the foundation and getting the raw materials we required to get production going, namely, characters and universe design.
Here’s what has come out of it, so far.
The things that happened.
The Z-Engine’s basics have been learned.
In short, we can make boxes hit each other.
In slightly less short, we can make boxes hit each other, and put sprites to those boxes so that the result is an animated character; we can also make those characters interact with each other (i.e. beat the proverbial candy out of their opponent) and we’ve looked at the underlying foundations of the Z-engine, learning what bits of code do certain stuff, how they do it, and how can we make them do that stuff in the order and manner in which we want them to do it.
It’s less building-with-legos and more actually having some proper tools than what FM2K has, and even though our DevTeam caught on the idea fast, practice and experimentation on just how much pushing can be done (a lot) in comparison with our old engine took us time.
Learning that the FM2K imposed barriers of technical development (things like more than 1-bit transparency and the like) were no longer there and we could do way more with it took us a bit more to wrap our minds around of; once we did, what followed was a short, but intensive period of squeeing, imaginating the endless possibilities, and generally thinking way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaaay too far out of the box, before realizing we were falling into the dreaded feature-creep loop, pulling ourselves closer to the aforementioned squareish-shaped container, and continuing with more sensible goals in mind.
Tools have been developed
The Z-Engine is more powerful, more capable, and more “awesomer” than FM2K was, by far, but it was made by Mike Z with his and his team’s needs, tastes, and workflow mechanics in mind, not to mention with the intention of making Skullgirls, a fighting game that, while pretty darn tootin’ awesome, has different mechanics than our project does. Our workflow and art pipeline are also somewhat different, so some adaptation was required.
To accomplish that, we (read: Our programmers), built a couple of custom-made tools to hammer at the engine with: Hotbox and Saddle. We rock at naming new stuff.
Hotbox
Hotbox is a proprietary hitbox editor: You put images in one side, drag boxes over those images, and hitbox’d engine-ready files come out of the other side. Eventually, it’ll do a few more things, and look prettier, but for now, it does its job and saves development time.
![]() |
| Not final art. Or final hotbox. Might change. Has changed. Improved. A lot. Doesn't represent final product. Or final art. Or final cow. Take with a grain of salt. And some BBQ sauce. |
Saddle
Saddle is designed to make scripting and editing the game “on the fly” (that is, without having to re-export a hundred files for every minute pixel fix or mechanic value change) easier for CoreDev. Saddle’s test flight has been handling the code-side of the UI (particularly the HUD) for the game, but as development progresses, it will also handle other areas of character creation and mechanics management.

| This is what a Health bar's insides look like. Pretty, huh? |
Characters have been created
While our programmers refined the aforementioned tools, CoreDev worked on the character design, as well as brainstorming on the universe these characters inhabit.
Initial concepts were discussed, refined, discussed again and finally agreed on, and once we were satisfied with the result, focus on each individual character commenced. Silhouettes, expressions, technical details, turnarounds, personalities… The kind of things involved with making new characters from scratch.
You have seen a few bits and teasers in the previous updates, both here in the site and in our twitter. You’ve also seen a couple of ingame placeholders, which at this point we’re required by Omari to remind you, are not indicative of any final design, art style, personality, character species, colour, smell or flavour. You’ll be seeing more in a future.
![]() |
| Who's that ungulate, mon? |
Currently, we’re in the process of creating models, which are libraries of body parts in different poses, in order to get a starting point from which to begin animating our new characters. Unlike the previous project, in which (thanks to the people who worked on the source material) we had a pre-built library of poses and movements to draw initial concepts from, this time we are required to do them from scratch. Also unlike our previous project, the bulk of these model libraries can not be shared between characters, due to their different body builds and animation requirements, which represents more work to get through.
Legalities have been sorted.
Mostly. After lawyering in our general direction, back-and-forth consulting and making double sure no toes are being stepped on and that things can proceed without an unwelcome legal surprise crashing through our window -again-, we are assured we’re ready to continue working. There’s still a couple details to work through, which is why we can’t go into specifics on most stuff at the moment, but they’re soon to be sorted.
All of which brings us to the next part of this post:
Looking forward to 2014
The things that will happen
January
In January, this website will be moving from being hosted by a free blogger service (and all its kinks and little annoyances) to a self-hosted, Wordpress based website we can modify and customize to our heart’s content without having to depend on delayed and almost nonexistent tech support. If something breaks, we’ll be able to fix it or trash it without having to wait for third parties to get back to our queries.
This transition will involve a couple days (or so) time, as we move from one place, and into the other, and should be mostly harmless, (or so we expect). We’ll give you guys a warning when we’re ready to pull the switch, so you aren’t alarmed if the site is inaccessible for a bit.
Q1 2014
And here’s the important bit.
Somewhere, in the first quarter of 2014, Mane 6 will be starting a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign, with the objective of funding development for this project. We can’t give you a number on how much that crowdfund will aim for just yet, but we can confirm it will happen.
As you guys know, our team for the past project, and so far for this one, has consisted of volunteers donating their time to the project for no economical compensation whatsoever, fueled only by passion and hype.
While this last part is still true, we’ve hit (a couple months back, actually), a point where we can not continue dedicating the full extent of our free time to development, due to other pressing obligations, namely the developers main payjobs and school.
All the required work, time, and expenses (such as site maintenance, software licensing and lawyer fees) so far have come out of our devteam’s pockets: If the crowdfund is successful, it will allow CoreDev to work FULL TIME on the project. That means things will get done better and faster, as we won’t have to worry about paying the bills; It’ll also allow the team to pay for some required upgrades, to license software libraries to improve the game, like GGPO, which would allow for a better online-multiplayer experience, and to compensate the people associated with the project outside of Mane 6 for their time and work.
Right after crowdfunding
Game development will explode, basically!
Mane 6 will be moving fully into the game’s production stage. Models will be finalized, the main animation work will commence, characters will start taking shape in the engine. We’ll be holding live streams of our work processes at this point (we can’t tell you when and how much, but we’ll try to get stuff going regularly), so you can follow on the development with us. Due to the different nature of the project’s basis (that is, now we own the IP), we won’t be as tight-lipped as we were during the development of Fighting is Magic.
It’s at this point we’ll also be introducing you guys properly to the characters and their universe. We’ll have some side-stuff that’ll help us that way. We have some ideas on how to go about this already, and we hope you guys enjoy this part of the process as much as we look forward to getting there!
It’s also on this point that we -might- be having a couple openings in the art area, particularly in background art & background character design, although animation might also see a job opportunity opening at some point in development; We do not yet know for certain what the situation will be regarding voice acting, but if open castings happen, it’s likely that the requirements will be stricter, and/or that we’ll require applicants to be physically located, or able to get transport for themselves to the area we’ll be recording on (most likely to be the Los Angeles area). Still, nothing set in stone there, and we’ll see how things develop. We do not foresee a job opportunity opening in the areas of SFX & Music or Programming opening at that point (and, most likely, not anywhere after that during main game development).
So if you are interested on becoming part of the Mane6 devteam, please keep an eye out for this. Regardless, we look forward to see what the future brings as the project moves into main development, and we’ll be happy if you guys continue following the game’s development!
________
So there you have it!; That is what’s happened so far, and what is to happen on 2014.
Last, but not least, everyone in the Mane6 devteam would like to thank you guys for sticking along with us on this one wild ride, for the support and the continued interest in our project, and for being generally awesome.
We’d also like to wish you all a happy new year, and here’s also lots of wishing that The Steam Holiday Sale didn’t take too much of a hold on your wallets! - After all, our crowdfunding campaign is coming! ;)
We loves you guys.
- Mane 6
p.s. Tron still lives.

ReplyDeleteI can dig ALL this right now. Kickstarter? AWWWW YEAH you got my money!
ReplyDeleteI wish the team over here the best of luck in traversing whatever lies within the future; let this be an eventful, and prosperous year for you all, cheers! ;D
ReplyDeleteI think something should happen to the evil bastards at Hasbro who stole Fighting Is Magic artwork for their facebook page. Seriously! The fact they can get away with shit so sinister is unnerving.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'll totally be sure tothrow a bit of my money to that kickstater!
ReplyDeleteI am incredibly excited for you guys! #savetennisshoecow
ReplyDeleteThat first silhouette, the one that looks like a llama, looks quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteWould be cool to incorporate some of the fandom's biggest voice actors, if possible. There's been some real talent on a lot of fan creations, including your own, and I'd like to see a lot of fan work turn into paid work.
I'll be sure to keep my wallet on standby.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely back it, either via Kickstarter or IndieGoGo. You can have my money you lot!
ReplyDeleteThese animals kinda sound like they are made of candy, or something.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year you guys!
ReplyDeleteRED LEADER STANDING BY!!!!
ReplyDeleteI know my fiancée would happily want a chance to work on background characters; helps that she also specializes in 4-legged animals. A Happy New Year to you all, and I look forward to hearing more~ XD
ReplyDeleteThis is the perfect way to start the new year. In fact, I was killing time playing the leaked version of Fighting is Magic while waiting for this to be released. Talk about coincidences. XD
ReplyDeleteAny chances of like a steam release? Or anything like that?
ReplyDeleteEhhh I wonder if the ones responsible for this got fired. I mean, just imagine the ammount of raging coming from fans if H.B. kept that picture on their F.B. page.
ReplyDeleteWhatever happens, I really, really, really like those elves. Please keep them if possible.
ReplyDeleteSo this means Lauren Faust is going to be paid/working on this full time as well? Or will she be more of a consultant while you hire other full-time animators and artists?
Glad to finally hear the project is still alive. I've been following since early on, and am genuinely impressed with what the team has accomplished. I look forward to a healthy project, and rewarded team.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you are even allowed to do this, given the way you obtained the engine, but what I would love to see above all else is modding support.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for the kickstarter regardless, as the game seems good enough to justify a pledge even without modding support.
I don't think you guys actually understand how happy this makes me. Please don't go so long without word again. We love you too.
ReplyDeleteStupid question: Is your game still going to be called "Fighting is Magic", or are you gunning for a name change?
ReplyDeleteim sorry but skullgirls is meh....
ReplyDeleteI assume she'll still only be working on this in her spare time since she still has to work on other projects like Wander Over Yonder.
ReplyDeleteAt least it has a very capable engine which Mane6 has clearly put through its paces.
ReplyDeleteGo burn yourself and die.
ReplyDeleteI really like. . . Their Mane highlights. :D
ReplyDeleteyes because i cant have my own opinion what are you twelve ?
ReplyDeleteNo need to be hateful about differing opinions. Cut it out.
ReplyDeleteFinally, we can throw some money your way!
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate what you have done here for the community and wish you success in your future endeavors. :)
would there ever be a chance of having these games on PSN/XBL?
ReplyDeleteIndiegogo or Kickstarter, eh? Whelp, I know where a portion of my tax return is going this year.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for this to release.
ReplyDelete...mostly because I know someone will inevitably mod the game to be back to having the ponies we all know and love. And I'll play the s*** out of that.
We have absolutely no hard feelings for Hasbro on that one; We just found it hilarious (and flattering, in an odd, roundabout way).
ReplyDeleteWe think it kind of speaks well about your work when the owners of an IP you were a fan from think it's so well done they can't distinguish it from the original, official art!
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIf we can get it on Steam, we totally will; it would really make our lives incredibly easier when it comes to patching and distribution
ReplyDeleteLauren is acting as our main character/universe designer. She provides us with the concepts and character references, and writes the new universe's canon.
ReplyDeleteAnimation, due to the technical needs of the game ("characters must be composed of this many pieces, move this way and graphically represent this group of hitboxes") is up to Jay, Luke and Omari, who make 3/5ths of CoreDev.
We're honestly not looking too much (if at all) towards getting the Z-engine to work some mod support. Due to the genre of the game, (Fighter), which is very much dependent on strict balance control, mechanic-based mods aren't something we're looking to support, and due to the art-to-engine pipeline we use, graphic-based mods would be a pain for us to implement and maintain support on.
ReplyDeleteStill, thank you for your interest! =) - Very much appreciated. We hope to see you there when the crowdfunding comes up, and we doubly hope you enjoy what you see!
Terms like "brand confusion" came up a lot when lawyer talks were had, so a name change is most probably going to happen. Mane 6 is staying Mane 6, though.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see! - We can't promise anything right now, as our crowdfunding still needs to happen; We're not currently aiming for a console release right now, and focusing on PC only, but if things go extremely well...
ReplyDeletewhen mlp fim end can u make the game and if from was i seen the maker of the show is in your team no so why cant u make fighting is magic anymore
ReplyDeleteWell technically they stole a concept to begin with so whats all the kettle calling?
ReplyDeleteif the show end can u make it and i the maker of the show is with u u cant u make fighting is magic
ReplyDeleteWell, Hasbro stole it from its actual creators through manipulation of the means of production, so... Yeah, capitalism is complicated.
ReplyDeletei say just make fight is magic fulley dont tell anyone sand it out
ReplyDeleteRock on, Mane6! You've still got my support, for sure. Also, that reindeer(?) is SO CUTE.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
We'll just have to mod it the hard way, like with Minecraft. =)
ReplyDeleteif
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust is in your team y cant u stell make fighting is magic
if Lauren Faust is in your team why cant you just make the game fighting is magic is the one who made the show
ReplyDeleteI've heard it cost something like $50,000 to get a game on xbl (dunno about psn though)
ReplyDeleteEven after the show ends Hasbro will still have the rights to the franchise, and will most likely still be making money off of FiM products. The only way to avoid legal issues without going full underground would be to outright buy the franchise off of hasbro. (which would probably be several hundred million dollars)
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely be backing this, whichever route you guys go with.
ReplyDeletebut ifLauren Faust is on the game now why not just make see made the show the mlp ponies i think so y not do u no i dont no much about law stuff
ReplyDeleteLauren doesn't own the rights to the ponies, so she can't allow them to use them.
ReplyDeletein all the ep its cre8ter
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust
y doz ant
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust own the rights to to ponies
i think hasbro like fighting is magic they have ur game files no there might make it to get money
ReplyDeleteBy this point is a fair assumption that you're just spamming comments, so please take an (enforced) time off and come back later.
ReplyDeleteAnd to answer your question: We don't really feel like making a Hasbro-related game anymore. Not when we can have our own Lauren Faust made IP where we can make the rules =P
Just because Faust was brought in to develop the series for television, it doesn't mean she owns the rights to the franchise, name, or characters. Hasbro hired her to work with the MLP series that Hasbro owns, and has always owned. Faust is amazing, but she has no power in this situation.
ReplyDeleteshe created the show yes, but hasbro owns it.
ReplyDeleteIt's like, if I pay you to make a painting for me. You created it, but I own it, cause I payed you to make it.
Same deal.
http://rojrunning.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Shut-up-and-take-my-money.jpg
ReplyDeleteshe doesn't own the brand, Hasbro does. she only directed the show's production, that doesn't mean that she has all the rights to it.
ReplyDelete'creating' and owning the license of a show is very different. Hasbro owns ALL the rights to MLP; merchandise, copyrights, designs, everything. Hasbro hired Lauren Faust to make the show, so she was working under Hasbro's license. She doesn't own any of the show.
ReplyDeleteAs one of the people still active in the Telepone (aka MTSP) Fighting is Magic community (we just won't let it die properly), I can definitely say I'm still waaaaaay excited for the new game. Maybe even more excited for this than I was for ponies. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteYou can definitely expect mine and so many others' support once that kickstarter starts! As long as tennis shoe twilight makes it though, I'll be happy.
More than just what background the characters come from... is there going to be a storyline of some sort?
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteSQUEE IM SO EXCITED FOR THINGS TO COME! <3
ReplyDeleteand the reindeer in the image at the top is just gorgeous :D
A kickstater? Noice! Now I know you'd guys probably get a lot of flak from brony haters, and so that MIGHT make things a bit hard donation wise, so I think I'll save up at least $100 to throw at you guys when the time comes... then again, bronies be crazy generous with donations... ah what the hay, I'll still throw in a hundred, cause I really like you guys!
ReplyDeleteGoodluck!,
WhalePonyHybrid
I can't wait to give you guys the money you have so desperately earned. We're still with you, 100%, cradle to grave (except the "grave" in this case applies to the production process ya'll can fianlly say you've defeated). We all continue to enthusiastically await your final release, and thank you very much for your New Year's update (I was really beginning to wonder how things were going again).
ReplyDeleteAlso, please remember to tell Lauren thanks again, for all of us. Although we would have supported you anyway, it's such a show of faith and support that the lady who sparked our little fandom personally involved herself in your efforts, both post C&D and post-departure from her creation.
Keep at it guys. We'll be waiting. Maybe when I come back from my impending deployment I'll have a buttload of new content to digest? Here's hoping.
Oh, and Happy New Year. ^_^
Mostly just asking this out of curiosity, but do you have an estimate on the goal for the kickstarter? I'm rather interested in knowing.
ReplyDeleteBecause it's still Hasbro's intellectual property in perpetuity, just like all the previous generations of MLP. Hasbro hired Lauren Faust to develop the show, characters, designs, and artwork of G4 for them; Faust retains none of the rights to any part of it.
ReplyDeleteQuote: "We can’t give you a number on how much that crowdfund will aim for just yet, but we can confirm it will happen.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the full cast.
ReplyDeleteWhile I know you are still working on this project, you've basically created a new game company, or will. My question is, once this game is finished do you have ideas for future projects your team might be looking in to?
ReplyDeleteThank you! =)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your support!; Happy new year to you as well.
ReplyDeleteYes, actually; We had a couple of ideas on what we wanted to do after Fighting is Magic, and we still have them in reserve; We're not thinking too hard about them, but we -do- have ideas of what we want to do eventually. One project at the time!
ReplyDeleteYo, I've been following this since the very beginning and I'm still far too hyped for this. I'm pretty much backing this to my fullest extent possible and I know a bunch of people who feel the same. It's not exactly much right now, but at least me and my friends are backing this 100%.
ReplyDeletei'm not much of a brony at all really, but i am a hugh fan of fighter/brawler games, and been following the updates to this project since "friendship is fighting" was first announced and i can proudly say i wish you all the best of luck, hopefully this gets funded, and i will gladly contribute to this project so i can play it ASAP and help move the project along faster.
ReplyDeletep.s. hopefully you guys can aim to release this on steam.
Not sure if anyone has asked this before but out of curiosity; any rough plans on the game's pricing? Assuming you're charging for the finished product when the time comes.
ReplyDelete>.> <.< wat
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, this game is not made by Hasbro, and Lauren Faust is helping make the game, not in the game (well in the credits as an exception.) Lauren Faust is just a well, you know, who developed the characters, who made the story lines, etc. She is just a part of the big company, in which she isn't the president of the company, just a part in one of its shows. So summing it all up, Lauren Faust can't control Hasbro because she is not the owner of Hasbro and even if Lauren Faust is here doesn't mean she can protect Mane6.
I find this entire situation vaguely interesting, because my interest in this game has outgrown my interest in the show that inspired the first version. I kind of dropped out of the "brony" community a few months back, somewhat from peer pressure, but I still check in on this website on a daily basis. I have a few questions that I want to ask, if that's okay:
ReplyDeleteNever really donated to a Kickstarter before.
ReplyDeleteFirst time for everything!
I sure hope that they didn't get fired. Wouldn't that be horrible? Imagine them coming home to their families, crying, because they won't be able to support them any more. Then a divorce happens, cut to Christmas 2014 and they're drunk out of their mind screaming at someone in a bar because they just got a legal notice from the lawyers of some group called "Mane6" of copyright infringement.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the wonders of getting fired.
Fantastic. Thanks for the replies!
ReplyDeleteHYPE
ReplyDelete'nuff said
Hm. Better look into getting a good old fashion ed SNES controller for my desktop soon. But in all seriousness, the fact that there will be a UNIVERSE (dramatic caps) and a relevant storyline draws me to it. Looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosoty, I'm looking to go imto similar fields. How much time would you say it takes to even, say, program a moveset w/o animation?
I backed Skullgirls just to see this game happen. Skullgirls is fun though and I'm glad I own it, but this is the true prize.
ReplyDeleteImportant Question: the game will still called Fighting Is Magic ?
ReplyDeleteUm. No. Mane6 made a game using someone else's property and got caught. Hasbro owns MLP and can do what they want. I can make a stupid ass Monster High fighting game but that wont stop me from getting sued. I love Fighting is Magic and wish they got the green light. I downloaded a version but this is not Hasbro's fault. It's one thing to be a fan but when people start blaming the owners it's like really? Your that mad? Google Terrordrome. An awesome concept that unfortunately cannot be commercially released for the same reasons.
ReplyDeleteAs long as your familiar with whatever scripting language you plan to use, I'd say the coding part is easy.
ReplyDeleteAny update on potential voice auditions?
ReplyDeleteI'm throwing my money at my computer screen but nothing is happening :(
ReplyDeleteMy money cannon is loaded. I just need to be told where to shoot it at.
ReplyDeleteBacking for sure, I'm really interested in seeing this project succeed.
ReplyDeleteI still suggest "Four-Legged Fisticuffs"
ReplyDeleteToo early to tell. We need to see if we're going to be able to get on steam, or if we'll be doing our own distribution, what happens during the crowdfund, the general videogame ambient when time comes to release, etc.
ReplyDelete1. The requirements to start a campaign Kickstarter are a little higher than those of Indiegogo, but they offer a bit more security, we think. The biggest draw of Kickstarter would be that you don't have to deal with Paypal's shenanigans when it comes to crowdfunding, as those that the game devs for Yatagarasu and Skullgirls (both fighting games, incidentally), had to go through. On the other side, Kickstarter's payment methods are credit card, credit card, or credit card, which might limit what amounts people can pledge to a crowdfunding, or even if they can pledge at all.
ReplyDeleteFlexible funding IS IGG's biggest draw, but we're not very inclined to use it; We have a rough idea of how much developing this game will cost, and we know getting in half or a third or a quarter what we need, and taking it anyways is just gonna get us in troubles, as we'd be promising to deliver a full-cost game with less than the required budget to complete it (and we -do- need that budget. Software licensing isn't one of those things you can just do for free, but slower).
All that said, there's still a lot of smaller, but important considerations we have to make to get a decision on which one to go for; We are looking closely into what's the best option, considering the drawbacks, and trying to compensate for them. We'll let you guys know how it's going as we get through it.
2. Thank you for the offer! - We don't have much we can show or say other than what is in the post at the moment, but if you'd like to get an article, interview, or what-have-you going, by all means, we're up. If you'd like to plug our game in your site, also brilliant, and we'd be thankful for it! =)
That's most likely a no. As mentioned in a few other comments in the post, "brand confusion" was a term that came up when talking to lawyers. We're still totally Mane 6, though!
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome to get a reply from you guys, and best of luck! Yeah, I'll be sure to write something for when you guys get your KCK/IGG up, and anything until that is your guys' call.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned in the post:
ReplyDelete"We do not yet know for certain what the situation will be regarding voice acting, but if open castings happen, it’s likely that the requirements will be stricter, and/or that we’ll require applicants to be physically located, or able to get transport for themselves to the area we’ll be recording on (most likely to be the Los Angeles area). Still, nothing set in stone there, and we’ll see how things develop."
Not on the xbox one anymore.
ReplyDeleteMicrosoft has started the ID@xboxone project, that offers help and great support to every indie developer out there who wishes to release a game on xbox one ;)
should do a survey for the crowdfund
ReplyDeletethis would be my crowdfund
$10- fighting is magic OST
$50- code steam
$100- a exclusive SHIRT
$500- voice mail by voice actor
$1000- 1 plushie
$5000- plushie all character
$10000- dinner with lauren faust and mane6 team
add more, but I have no more idea =)
I recommend everyone give their idea for the crowdfund to mane6 :D
Diehard Skullgirls fan, here. Community consensus is that your community helped us get what we needed, so we'll help you. Expect us to back the crap out of this.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to hear from other parts of the FGC, especially when it's a name I recognize! Nice to know the SG players are in!
ReplyDeleteI will most likely do my best to help fund this. Will have to keep up with you guys to see when your fund project comes out.
ReplyDeleteFreakin awesome, i've been waiting to see an update about this game woo!
ReplyDeleteglad you guys are getting the legalese sorted out /)
Looking forward to seeing the release of this game, steam or not, and will most likely try to give some money if I can during your crowdfunding
Best of luck guys!
ReplyDeleteBut then again this project was completely non-profit and a parody both of which are normally exempt from copyright law. Sueing over this is just as pointless as sueing someone over writing a fan-fiction. Look at all the "Abridged" series on Youtube or "Red Vs Blue", they are parodies that take characters, worlds and even stories straight from the source ips and still get away with selling merchandise because they are parodies. In the case of "Fighting is Magic" it's not hurting the main ip, no one is profiting from the ip and if anything it's just a little bit of extra free advertising.
ReplyDeleteEven though they don't need the extra advertising they gained absolutly nothing by putting the cease and desist order on it, unless they were also creating a 2D fighting game based on the MLP characters, which I highly doubt. It seems to me that this is Hasbro's legal department having an itchy trigger finger and wanting to show off thier legal muscle.
Wow, that code~ Even though I write scripts, it looks more advanced for my level of coding. o_0
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from ya guys by the way, keep up ya awesome work. ^_^
Miss-typed, I meant: harder than my current level,
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Thanks a lot for the answer. Keep going forward, guys!
ReplyDelete> Raises Eyebrow
ReplyDelete> Begins To Slow Clap
> Stands Up
> Loud, Genuine Applause
:')
More than a bit from me. These guys are my heroes!
ReplyDeleteI am still impossibly hyped for this game! Heck, I'm hyped for the company! I can't wait to see what Mane6 becomes over time. I'd love to see you guys at PAX someday too.
ReplyDeletethere are 2 things bothering me with this game that i couldnt find anywhere while it is important information
ReplyDeletenumber 1: Now that it isnt based on mlp anymore there isnt really a background or a story line so is there coming any?? because every fighting game haves one some are very clear in the game some do you get to know playing the game and some arent that clear but there is a story. And i really like your style and all but if there is a lack of storyline i wont play it myself this game can be really awsome if everything is added but without a storyline it is just the skeleton without skin..
and 2: is this game going to cost us money thats all.
i might not repeat to this but the main reason why i posted this is for others to read (and ofcorse read the comment on this if there ever will be one) because im not the only one having question!
I seriously can't wait. I will fund you guys as much as I can to help you guys pay for whatever! I'm so excited for this game! You'll probably be getting as much money from me as I spend on Skullgirls.
ReplyDeleteI like the new character, she's about as pretty as Rarity. I'll be chipping in for the kickstarter.
ReplyDeleteOn a personal note I'd throw my hat in with Kickstarter as well. Specifically, Kickstarter accepts Amazon Payments, which incidentally accepts Vista Certified Debit Cards (in Canada at least?). So I've been able to donate through Kickstarter with my bank account, way before I ever used my credit card online. I'm honestly not sure how many users can actually benefit from this, but it may be an additional option for some.
ReplyDeleteAs you said, Software licensing is not cheap, and its also not something thats good to skimp on. If you do a Kickstarter, I'll definitely throw in.
Either way I wish the best of luck to all of you. Like Will's comment, I've fallen away from the initial community, but I still follow M6 because of the amazing talent that you guys have. So keep up the awesome work and whatever happens I'm sure it will be awesome!
Technically, Fighting is Magic SHOULD'VE been protected, but parody law is worded poorly.
ReplyDeleteAWW YEAH, i'll miss the mlp version but i bet after all that's happend the game will be one of the best of its kind ;) Good luck with this project and keep going!
ReplyDeleteIf a few measly bits aren't enough, then it'll be a wad of jangles they get from me!
ReplyDeleteIm already a backer and they havnt even begun starting the campaign yet...
ReplyDeletereally all they got hit for was likenesses were too close. it wasnt a sue thing it was a cease and desist mostly because it was going to be at evo. I have an updated version of fighting is magic with rainbow dash somewhat in it but still not all animated.
ReplyDeleteAnd since they're property of Hasbro, they'd have to have that mark branded to their buttcheek tore of before getting dismissed. XD
ReplyDeleteWell, the point was that Mane6 gave credit where due for their non profit fan project, where Hasbro took an element of the fan piece for monetary advertising and didn't even give a hint about who was responsible fir the piece after doing what they can to destroy project. It was a pretty dishonest move on their part. It's not right to distribute or manipulate art without crediting the artist, even if you own the IP the piece depicts. See what I'm saying here?
ReplyDeleteFuck yeah!
ReplyDeleteI suppose I am overreacting. I'm mean, I'm not getting any notices from Hasbro for using screencaps for my avatars and it's not like they seized the project and used the sourcecode and used it to develop some Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover fighting game thing to promote themselves! XD
ReplyDeleteI would expect that from a company like Disney, though. Those guys have threatened to sue daycares for having Mickey Mouse art and stuff on the walls.
Anyway, I do love to see fan projects execute the style of the subject as accurately as this! It's really cool and stuff like that has inspired me to simulate styles. Especially when I'm using Flash to create something that is based on something that is officially made in Flash!
This is one example I've posted to a parody account I have on DeviantArt:
http://fav.me/d5i8pec
If you created a cartoon series and a few people made fan art and fanfics with full credit to you, it isn't stealing unless they claim to be the owners of the series. You would have a right to request that they take it down and can take action to ensure that they comply, but it would not be legal for you to steal their pieces based on your work and give yourself all the credit. Not even if you manipulate it, unless they had it registered under a Creative Commons license that allows you to do so.
ReplyDeleteBesides, Hasbro didn't have the project destroyed because it infringes upon their IP, they claim to have done it because they don't agree with how their characters are being depicted and how they're being portrayed in a way that doesn't agree with how they were being in a game that wasn't suitable for the targeted demographic. The fact it looked so authentic probably stregthened their decision to put a stop to it, too.
That or they're just butthurt about how cool it was gonna be! Anyway, non-profit fan project, or even for profit, never hurts an IP and actually does a fair job promoting it if the work becomes popular enough. It's not like it's piracy and steals a sale, I mean Fighting is Magic is a game based on rubber pony toys and people's decisions to buy those products won't be impacted in a negative way if they played a freeware fangame based on them.
I'm also not really going against Hasbro's decision to have the development stopped, what I don't support is how they used elements they didn't make from it for their own use.
1, As per the post.
ReplyDelete"It’s
at this point [after crowdfund] we’ll also be introducing you guys properly to the
characters and their universe. We’ll have some side-stuff that’ll help
us that way. We have some ideas on how to go about this already, and we
hope you guys enjoy this part of the process as much as we look forward
to getting there!"
2. Most likely, yes.
Going a bit off-tangent on this, we think.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, for one reason or the other, Hasbro decided to shut down the project, and, legal or moral agreement or disagreement with that, we decided to comply with their C&D letter to avoid further problems we were really not up to get into.
While it's really disappointing we didn't get to finish our first project, all of that is in the past now. We're excited about the new game, and we hope you guys are too!
Prepare your wallets, mane6. You have no idea how crazy things are going to get when you hit kickstarter.
ReplyDeleteadd also GGPO and in collaboration with Skullgirls team release a crossover game!
ReplyDeleteoh dang, I'm not sure, but I had heard something about MS being kinda bad to Indie devs (might be wrong here though), maybe that super cost has something to do with it, don't know if Sony is any better either though...man, I know it's not Pony anymore, but I would just love to see this game succeed as much as possible xD
ReplyDelete"Quadruped Fighting Simulator 2014"
ReplyDeleteAnd now instead of developing a parody game about adorable ponies beating each other up, you have a game featuring an original setting with alpacas, reindeer, udderless cows and other ungulates beating each other up! :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough Fighting is Magic was amazing, this game may open many unique opportunities, I think. I hope this year goes well for the team!
Very exciting! Really looking forward to seeing what you guys do with this new idea! :D Definitely supporting the kickstarter when it opens!
ReplyDelete(Oh, and finger so, so crossed that a goat will make it into your ungulate lineup...!)
entonces ya no hay posibilidades para que el juego fighting is magic pueda seguir?
ReplyDeleteI stop coming here for awhile now and when I came back there is a Kickstarter happen in a couple of days??? Holy crap! Time to whip out the dough and get this game funded.
ReplyDeleteHoof Busters!
ReplyDeleteOh of course the new game looks amazing and the new character designs are all kinds of awesome. Also it is epic that you have Lauren Faust on your team now as a character designer and I will definately donate to your kickstarter/ indiegogo campaign.
ReplyDeleteIt's just that, I guess that the actions of Hasbro's legal team still baffles me a bit.
1. If they didn't agree with how the characters are depicted in the game there are and were a million other things that showed the characters being far worse (Grimdark fictions, pics, animations and numerous horror game mods) that weren't targeted at all.
ReplyDelete2. Correct me if I'm wrong but there were times in the actual series where violent acts were portrayed (Rarity kicking a Manticore, Rainbow Dash attacking a dragon, Spike's fantasy where he's fighting off Diamond Dogs in order to save Rarity, Mayor Mare wrestling with Ditzy Doo/ Derpy Hooves when put under the "want it/ need it" spell as well as the rest of Ponyville, Discorded Rarity going Kung Hoof on Applejack when she touches Tom, taking down an entire swarm of changelings, the Nightmare Moon/ Celestia battle, etc.), so we know that they can resort to violence when they need to.
3. If it was the fact that they just saw this game as mindless violence between their main characters this could have been solved through a story mode giving reasons as to why they're fighting.
4. If all else fails, disclaimers are your friend. They could have just had one stating that it was a free fan-made parody, all characters are property of Hasbro and to support the official series and merchandise. The fact that it is "fan-made" should completely relenquish any backlash that Hasbro gets from pissed off parents.
So yeah, still completely baffled why they went all out c&d, but at least it worked out for Mane6 in the end.
Stampede, Wildebeast, Hooves & Heroics, Farm Fighters
ReplyDeleteRED 3 STANDING BY!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have one question. Will swaf ever come back or be included in the game?
ReplyDeleteHope everything goes smoothly, can't wait to play! Need any beta testers? :D
ReplyDeleteWaitwaitwait..........I just remembered that the game uses the Skullgirls engine
ReplyDelete......does that mean it also uses 6 button attack configuration??
Shit...
ReplyDeleteI lol'd at $1,000 for a plushie but not as much as $10,000 for dinner.
ReplyDeleteThe engine isn't restrictive, it could use as many or as few buttons as they'd like.
ReplyDeleteWhew, I hope they don't use 6 attack button configurations....
ReplyDeleteSix button layouts are fairly common in fighting games, is there some reason you dislike them?
ReplyDelete"Long" time fan and Indiegogo backer here :) If you ever need help with Wordpress, just hit me up!
ReplyDeleteSuch a notion may seem too simplistic, but on the face of an
ReplyDeleteever-growing number of highly-stressed individuals, it seems to work well as a general guide.
Need to work out before you head off to the office.
How fast are you currently able to get new clients if you were to suddenly lose one or two of them.
Insanity workout 60 Day program
Ah okay cool. I've played on both four button and six button games a lot, so I can understand why some people prefer one over the other. Each game just needs a layout that suits it, and boom, it'll work out.
ReplyDeleteI like you, I like this idea.
ReplyDeleteWOOT!!! So excited for this! May 2014 bring good fortunes to you all!
ReplyDeleteit would be great if you guys could sneak in your old version in this game as like hidden characters and leak on twitter or something the unlock code so we can still have our old mane 6
ReplyDeleteThis sounds exciting and cool but, i wish you guys could actually use the mane6 as characters like they had on ps3/360.
ReplyDeleteBut when you got the order from hasbro to stop this thing from happening, Lauren Faust came in and said "I'll help you". but since she's the creator of the show, she would have all the power to allow you guys to use the characters as part of the game.
However, I am looking forward to this game being completed in the next year or two.. long time right? Don't rush it. Can't rush perfection.
Lauren only helped make the ponies the way they are now, she does not own any rights to them. She has absolutely no power when it comes to what can be done with them.
ReplyDeleteIf anything like that ever happened, Hasbro would immediately come back and destroy Mane6. They aren't going to do that, it would be absolute dev studio suicide.
ReplyDeleteLike the idea. I'm fine with the $10 OST, but everything above that is about 2-3 times more expensive than it should be. I'll refer to the SG crowdfunding campaign:
ReplyDelete$30 got you a steam code AND Beta access
$200 got you the voice mail
Plushies can be lumped in with the shirt and A LOT of other stuff
$7500 got you a plane ticket, 3 nights in a vegas hotel room, a chance to hang out with the dev team for the entire week, a custom fightstick, AND dinner with the devteam, not counting pretty much every other reward in the campaign.
Come to think of it, there's a lot of stuff I haven't got yet from their Indiegogo campaign... hmm...
actually as hidden characters it shouldn't be advertised that they are in the game... and that should keep them safe. as long as they don't give out the code on the official site for the game they could get away with it. its all about Hasbro's legal department not finding out about the mane 6 being in the game.
ReplyDeleteA: If LITERALLY anyone ever mentions it somewhere, then Hasbro can find out and sue Mane6 into oblivion for not complying with the C&D.
ReplyDeleteB: You, and many other people, have mentioned this type of thing before, therefore it's already something on the internet, and if Hasbro thought Mane6 had done something like that, it's evidence enough.
ok first off...
ReplyDeleteA. the only reason that Hasbro attacked them in the first place is because of the MEDIA coverage the game got... not player hype. If they keep the mane 6 out of all the media attention as well as the official channels and site info it should be fine. they don't attack rumors and they don't download and test the game.
B. they won't answer or say they will do what is suggested because that would be admitting to breaking the C&D if they deny and deny but do it they can do it without worry.
realize please that if they release the game with open coding they can claim that the code was added by someone else and avoid legal repercussions.
Whatever reason Hasbro had to send a C&D doesn't change the fact that it was still sent. Mane6 are in a difficult position because if they don't comply to the C&D fully, then Hasbro can easily be at their throats. Having you tell me what Hasbro does and doesn't do isn't exactly going to make me believe you, with no offense meant there.
ReplyDeleteThe simple fact is that if word gets out anywhere that any of Hasbro's licensed ponies are in the game, there will be hell to pay. Denying it will not help.
Releasing the game with an open source code? Really? Okay, I hate to burst your bubble, but this is a fighting game. In order for two people to fight each other online, they need the same version of EVERYTHING. That means that if even one file is misplaced or altered, the game desyncs, which means the two players start seeing different things happening, they could both see each other winning because of this.
Mane6 has a great opportunity here, with Lauren working with them, and the Z-Engine to work with, and there is absolutely no reason to take a chance like that.
The Capcom-style six buttons layout is kinda overwhelming, but how about this: four buttons for the usual main moves, and other buttons (likely the trigger buttons in most modern controllers) for extra stuff like taunt and special.
ReplyDeleteNo, even better: how about a crossover with Lauren Faust's own "Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls"? :P
ReplyDeleteWhen this game is completed can you release the Z-Engine for public (Non commercial) use?
ReplyDeleteOkay, a couple things. First, the Z-Engine is a proprietary engine owned by Mike Z and Lab Zero. You would need to pay them a LOT of money in order to have it for use in any way shape or form. Mane6 can't give it to you, it's just not legally possible. You'd need to talk to Lab Zero for any licensing options.
ReplyDeleteSecondly... why would they want to make your life easier? I'm not trying to insult you here, I'm just raising a point that if they did any of that, it could net them in trouble with Hasbro again, and no one wants that. I'm just going to keep my personal opinions out of this since I don't want them grouped together with Mane6's.
With the helping I meant non copyright infringing elements like the hitsparks just include them in the new game so we can rip them to put in the pony version and does anyone know where I can find the high res angel bunny uppercut thing I just want the angel one because I'm making a wallpaper for a friend. he doesn't like ponies but he asked for a FiM themed wallpaper
ReplyDeleteI would definitely be up for donating, however I don't trust my PC with games (best not to ask), and I would definitely need a console port to play your game. But nonetheless, I was a fan of your project from when I first heard about. Keep doing what you're doing.
ReplyDeleteyes its 2014 , just cat wait till its finished :3
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to this. I'm a little strapped for cash at the moment, with a part time job attempting to help me save for a car and college, but I'll do whatever I can to get this thing going. My goal is to eventually end up in Game Development, and it just wouldn't be right if I ignored this team and all their efforts.
ReplyDeleteA couple of hopefully simple questions:
1) What kind of perks are we looking at for the crowdfunder?
2) What language is that code in? I only know C# and ActionScript 3, and I don't recognise it.
all you would have to do is add an extra part to the mark and then it wouldn't be theirs anymore. ...loop holes.
ReplyDeleteThat's not really true. If you take a snapshot or other copyrighted piece, use it as a background for your own work and upload it to a site like Deviantart, you are claiming to own the copyright of all the conent and if a staff member of the site discovers that piece, they will pull ot down for such reasons. (Which is a more desirable fate than doing it a bunch of times and having some butthurt company find it first)
ReplyDeletePublishing a manipulated photo that belongs to someone else is only really legal if they give you permission directly or in the form of a proper Creative Commons License or some other such license that allows you to do so.
Your gang can claim turf with tags, but it doesn't legally belong to you. :3
I must say, it'll be intriguing to see a Fighting game with Quadrupeds instead of Bipeds. XD i hope the game gets the funding it needs to work on it, i'm willing to even BUY it once it comes out. And this is coming from a guy who LOATHES fighting games.
ReplyDeleteYes! And you will be getting money from me... I know you guys are going to hate this suggestion, but i strongly recommend doing what minecraft did and, when you have a few character, give out a demo of the project. Not like a huge thing, just something small. Not only will this give you feedback on how (obviously) great the project is going, but this will also reduce the risk of your entire project being taken advantage of. People will have fun playing the demo for a while and you can work on the project altogether. Of course you will get those people that will moan and cry about something however, that happens in almost any game, developed or finished. You don't have to do this, I'm just saying there are some benefits to it, even if the game is unfinished. Whether you do or don't I will sill be supporting you 110%. Also I'm throwing money at the screen and nothing is happening.
ReplyDeleteThink back to when the project was fim; when the mane6 allowed people to fight with them someone had taken the entire project and posted online because they wanted it that badly however, a demo or beta version allows fans to not only play an (obviously) great game, but calm them down and be exited for what other wonders may emerge. Plus, they would immediate feedback on how the game is going so far.
ReplyDeleteAnd the people who were involved with that were fired, and they already have people lined up as Lead QA, whom they trust. Sharing an unfinished game with the public is fine, but it has to be at least VERY close to being finished, otherwise people can get easily distracted and think that what they see is a finished product.
ReplyDeleteAgain, my opinions do not reflect those of the Mane6 devteam.
I... Think we are on the same page? 394 I believe. At any rate, whatever they do is fine by me. I'm just ready for the kickstarter. Oh, and the demo can say "This is not the complete game, refer to our web page for more information". Actually I have a question for you. Based on the characters we have seen so far. Bull or deer?
ReplyDeleteYeah, Demos can say what they want, but people are really good at not reading things, haha. Disclaimers like that are always a good idea, though.
ReplyDeleteAnd to answer your question... neither. You'll see in the future.
AAAAAAAAA, WHY YOU GET ME HYPED
ReplyDeleteBECAUSE HYPED IS GOOD!
ReplyDeleteso none of the mlp fim characters are gonna be in this? damn shame :( Fuck hasbro!!
ReplyDeleteSo what is the ETA for the Kickstarter?
ReplyDeleteYeah i'd be willing to throw a paycheck at this.
ReplyDeleteIs there a move list 4 this game and who did the mugic 4 fighting is magic
ReplyDeleteFighting is Magic, or at least its old incarnation, was scored by 2 guys:
ReplyDeleteStuart Ferguson, a.k.a. Rainbowcrash88
http://www.rc88.co.uk/
And DJ Whitetail
https://soundcloud.com/whitetail-music
The Dev team already said that this game will no longer be involved with the pony franchise so fan ponies will not be in here.
ReplyDeleteI not sure about the move list, but they said that they will keep the same move set that had in the previous game as well as the button-layout. Your second question kind of confuse me I'm not sure if your trying to say "magic" or "music", but if your trying to ask for who doing the music for the game both RainbowCrash88 and WhiteTail will be doing the music for this game like the last time.
ReplyDeleteNor would they ever have, regardless.
ReplyDeleteMusic and sucks no fan ponies I like them In but can u do
ReplyDeleteThey aren't doing anything with ponies, Hasbro owned or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteoh thakz
ReplyDeleteare u aloud the use the same art theme u use in fighting is magic in this new game because some said on youtube the hasbro taken ur art theme and use it on there face book page
ReplyDeleteМда.
ReplyDeleteБез поней не торт.
ReplyDelete
