Skullgirls engine FAQ + teaser

Hey everyone!

We're gonna go over some of the questions regarding the Skullgirls engine licensing drive that's going on RIGHT NOW.

Won't this be a tonne more work?

The bulk of the work (and as labzero can tell you) is going to be art. Concepts, poses, animating, stages, gui. Music, sounds, voices. All of that needs to be redone regardless of engine. Learning a new engine will be a little bit more work, but there are also a lot of rewards for that work, as you'll see right.. HERE:

So what does the Skullgirls engine give you over FM2K?

MikeZ sent us a nice list of benefits that we can share with you:

For the players:

- Widescreen and HD resolution support
- Per-pixel lighting on sprites, a first for ANY 2D engine
- Real shadows
- 2D and 3D environment support
- Camera zooming
- Negative-edge and multiple-button-input special moves (QCT+PP, etc)
- No corner problems (rapid sprite-flipping, etc)
- Continuous collision: characters don't pass through each other when they shouldn't, no matter how fast they move
- Unlimited palettes per character
- GGPO* integration for seamless, non-delay-based online without a separate client
- Input display, save/load state, dummy record/playback, and all the other Skullgirls training mode features
- Frameskip that still accepts inputs on skipped frames, eliminating timing-based problems such as unblockables or dropped combos

For the developers:

- Full source code and any existing development tools; the ability to fix any problems with the engine themselves instead of having to just DealWithIt
- Tech support
- Future engine revisions and bugfixes
- HLSL shader support - any graphical effects your little heart desires can be created
- In-game palette editor, customizeable debug keys and many other time-saving features
- A scripting system written in plain English, with move motions written in regular fighting game notation and a robust munge tool
- The ability for sprites to tell when they have left the screen, rather than just the stage
- Support for 32-bit (i.e. truecolor, unpalettized) art for sprites when necessary, and mixing of truecolor and palettized frames
- Support for teams/assists and a console release, if ever desired

So lots of good stuff that we'd love to play with.

*GGPO?

GGPO basically lets the game be played multiplayer over a network. It's widely regarded as the best networking software for fighting games. SUPPORT for GGPO is included in the SG engine, but if we want to actually use it we'd have to purchase it separately. And yes, we would very much like to do that if we get the SG engine, because having good network multiplayer is extremely important to us!

Will it run on my crappy computer?

Short answer is that we don't know. MikeZ develops on his less-than-stellar laptop and it runs fine, but we don't know the exact system requirements yet.

Are you going to put the game on steam/ps3/360 if you get the engine?

Another one we don't know yet. All we know is that the SG engine would make all of those options open to us.

Isn't 725k really expensive?

Well, that's not the price of the license. That's just a stretch goal of their campaign that would mean we get it for free. It's just the easiest and quickest option for our team.

Why can't I just donate to you guys instead!

If we start accepting money, the SG engine would probably be one of the first items on our shopping list anyway, so some of the the money would go to labzero one way or another. As mentioned above, the stretch goal option cuts out a lot of the complication involved with that.

Will this mean it will play like skullgirls?

Not at all! Well.. apart from it being a 2D fighter. The engine is just a tool. Gears of War, Arkham Asylum, and Mortal Kombat 9 were all built on Unreal engine, but they are drastically different. Plus, as we've mentioned, we want to keep our already developed gameplay ideas mostly intact. Also, there is nothing in the SG engine that says it only works for certain kinds of characters (like 2-legged), just as there was nothing in FM2K that made it better for our 4-legged characters!

Is it Galaxy Girls? It's Galaxy Girls isn't it.

While we agree that the Galaxy Girls are kickass, Lauren is designing new characters for us. Like, NEW new, not old new. We meet with Lauren every week to talk about and develop these new characters together.

Speaking of which, we think it might be cool to show you guys three of the character concepts we've come up with so far. We thought it would be fun to show you them in silhouette form first. See if you guys can figure out who's who and what's what!

Enjoy!

I'm optimistic, but that Skullgirls campaign doesn't seem to be rising that rapidly. Though that might change, the largest amounts of cash are always at the beginning and end of the campaign.

I'm also extremely excited to see the characters that you're making, especially now that we've seen that you're sticking with the four-legged animals.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You can pretty easily tell them The deer one has its antlers, Cow has its tail, Llama has its excess amount of fluff.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just one clarification:
"- Per-pixel lighting on sprites, a first for ANY 2D engine"

Sorry but nope, it was already used as far back as Gish.

This is sounding really awesome I hope they'll achieve the stretch goal. And as for the character I'm super excited to see what Faust designed :]

  20. Just to put things in perspective. Over 150k was raised in the first 23.5 hours. Atm we are $256k with 8 days remaining. It was over 300k away before Mane6 and other third party groups started advertising the campaign. While its gonna be difficult, its not necessarily impossible from this range considering we are not in the final week yet, let alone the final 48 hours which usually rival the opening 48

    ReplyDelete
  21. you're super pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This could be incredibly fun! I can definitely see Lauren Faust's influence on this already. I'm super excited! :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Llama's/Alpacas?! This is the game I've been waiting for ever since Maxis started their Llama jokes in the early 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That third design looks like a badass Pokemon design. Can't wait to see more of this game.

    Coming from a Skullgirls fan.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A cow? That head is pretty high up for a cow.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Is this going to be Alpaca Fighter? They look like Alpacas

    ReplyDelete
  27. Left: AJ/Twilight counterpart
    Middle: AJ/RD counterpart
    Right: Fluttershy/Fluttershy counterpart

    ReplyDelete
  28. Okay the one in the middle is AJ. I know applebuckin' hooves when I see them.

Left one Pinkie maybe...? Allthough I don't see those tiny leg thingies do cartwheels

Right one, no idea, I guess either Flutters or Rarity. Pose has something Rarity-ish to it. Either way that thing looks frail and weak, so it's definitely a zoning heavy character nobody will ever play.

A question that's been bugging me - I see those splashes in the background, are you planning on keeping the artstyle same as before? Like with the colour splashes and the SF4esque ink strikes and the hexagons and the futuristic looking fonts and all that kind of stuff? Or will all of that get redesigned too? Because all of that stuff was pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Llamas confirmed. Great work commentators!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Is that an alpaca? Yes please!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Julius Picott19/3/13 5:44 PM

From left to right, I'd say Pinkie Pie, Applejack and Rarity. Why Rarity? Look at that graceful silhouette... :3

I'M EXCITED! YES! THIS IS AWESOME! I SO WANT THIS! You guys know I love you right? Hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Purple Prowess19/3/13 5:48 PM

    "Oh DUDE they got LLAMAS!"

Well, let's see what I can pick up.

    - They seem to be all female, which was expected, of course.
    - The "llama" looks somewhat like a chicken, which is funny. It probably replaces Pinkie Pie.
    - From the pose, the "cow" reminds me of Twilight, so that's probably her. I like that ear. :)
    - The "deer" could be either Fluttershy or Rarity, in my opinion. It also looks like some kind of sheep.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The art/interface style is going to be our starting point, at least; We'll see how it evolves from there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm going with Pinkiellama, Applecow, and Rarideer. Question: will whoever you turn Applejack into still have a hat?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The left looks like an alpaca, maybe Pinkie's counterpart, the middle one is perhaps a cow so applejack, and the one on the right is a deer; it's kind of fancy looking so new Rarity. Man this made me really excited, I pray you guys get the engine, I threw in a bit to the pot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Evan Miller19/3/13 5:54 PM

Holy crap this is going to be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Please, please, I'm begging you; at least keep the hexagons!
    Hexagons are cool u-u

    ReplyDelete
  38. IT'S BAMBI!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Julius Picott19/3/13 6:05 PM

Oh yes, I'd like to know as well. It would be a sweet subtle touch! <3

    ReplyDelete
  40. Julius Picott19/3/13 6:07 PM

    Oh hey, here's a question...

Will the game still be called Fighting Is Magic? I'd understand if you were to change the name, but I love it to be honest... I wouldn't mind if you kept it.

Hay, it is Fighting Is Magic at its core after all! ^-^

    ReplyDelete
  41. Elements_of_Apathy19/3/13 6:10 PM

Now that you're working with completely new characters, do you guys plan on releasing the game with all of the characters or are you still gonna stick to the previous plan of releasing a couple with DLC afterwards?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I can`t see any reason for Hasbro taking it down for calling it Fighting is Magic. That would be laughable. I hope they keep the name.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hirosashii19/3/13 6:20 PM

Just as excited as I was for Fighting is Magic. Bring on the quadruped fighters! Thank you guys so much for being resilient and doing your best.

    ReplyDelete
  44. As of now we plan on releasing with a couple characters, and adding on to that over time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Llama could be like Twilight of Pinkie Pie
The Cow could be like Applejack
    And
The Deer could be like Rarity

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hope these could be the characters names

    Llama- Precious
    Cow- Daisy Cornmuffin
    Deer- Bien-Aimée

    ReplyDelete
  47. shieldgenerator719/3/13 6:33 PM

I say second one is pony, but yeah the other two are obviously llama and deer, like Bambi

    ReplyDelete
  48. BaleyReeves19/3/13 6:34 PM

I see a frumpy Emporer Kuzco, a lady goat, and a poodle. O.o

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great to see progress on this! I hope we can hit $725k in the drive as both a Skullgirls and a Fighting is Magic fan!

    ReplyDelete
  50. wait since you can mess with the code for the skull girls engine, does this engine make mods possible?

    ReplyDelete
  51. As great as the character design is (as I knew it would be with Lauren at the helm), I hope they have different personalities than their MLP counterpoints. There's nothing wrong with inspiration, but based om these silhouettes; it's obvious these characters can stand stand on their own.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Llama! I'm sold! Give it a hat and it'll be OP.
Dropping a few bucks to SG, hope it helps!

    ReplyDelete
  53. The tail of the second one looks like that of a mule or a donkey to me. I also could be wrong, who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You guys should also add

    A Squirrel
    A Tiger
    A Panda
    A Wolf

And of course a Pony and/or Unicorn

    ReplyDelete
  55. Please make these movesets return

    ReplyDelete
  56. shieldgenerator719/3/13 6:53 PM

if it's the llama then it'll be llamas with hats

    ReplyDelete
  57. From left to right...

    Llama, Calf, Deer.
Fluffy neck, atypical tail, scrawny legs
    Hoity Toity, Rainbow Dash, Rarity
    Llamachu, Miltank, Deerling

    ReplyDelete
  58. shieldgenerator719/3/13 6:55 PM

yeah I thought fluttershy for the deer as well, because deer is reminiscent of bambi, which is a lot more like fshy than rarity

    ReplyDelete
  59. shieldgenerator719/3/13 6:56 PM

I hope you guys get the free engine!
(will getting a free engine make the game get released sooner?)

    ReplyDelete
  60. me want to play with the LLAMAAAAAAAA!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

    ReplyDelete
  61. Damn the grammatical errors.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Protip for Mane6: answer "yes" even if release date will be unaffected by SkullGirls.

    ReplyDelete
  63. your proper use of "you're" is super pretty :D

    ReplyDelete
  64. EDIT: left is more of a derpy than a hoity toity

    ReplyDelete
  67. The llama scare me a bit. Can't wait to see the cow and the deer!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Any estimations on how long development's gonna take?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Never followed this before (honestly, it only really hit my radar because of Skullgirls), but this actually looks pretty damn interesting
I may actually support this game when it gets developed

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jay Wright19/3/13 7:39 PM

Fill in the silhouettes with an armadillo! Post results :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. BlazetheAce19/3/13 7:41 PM

I like the second one :D

    ReplyDelete
  73. *sigh* this is mane6's game. If you have a good idea for a different game, perhaps you'd like to start a project of your own?

    ReplyDelete
  74. theres a llama.... I will officially be buying this game, it will be on steam right?

    ReplyDelete
  75. SymmetrYrtemmys19/3/13 8:06 PM

    Meganium, Keldeo, and Virizion?

    No....Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, duh.

    *shot*

Sorry, but the whole "show us the silhouette" thing reminds me of Pokemon. XD

Um....The second one looks pony-ish, minus the tail....a donkey, maybe? Or a zebra? The third one looks like a deer. The first one's got me stumped.

    Can't wait for more updates!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm guessing all of these pokemon parallels are coming from the fact that the fawn looks like Xerneas/deerling/sawsbuck (subconsciously if not intentionally)

    ReplyDelete
  77. If they have a wolf character I will donate SO hard. xD

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's from this. NSFW language http://youtu.be/YMtlAqgvtZ4

    ReplyDelete
  79. Is Chick Norris

    ReplyDelete
  80. first: Llamma or Alpaca as pinkie pie
Seccond: Mule or Donky as Twilight or Applejack
Three: Deer or Moose as Rarity or Twilight

PD: Ragardes all, I LOVE theidea of quadrupedals animals fighting in a cartonish a like game, This is the most original idea in years and I not see any other game using this idea

    ReplyDelete
  81. I preffer the pentakis-myriohexakisquilioletra-cosiohexa-contapentagonalis (56 645 sides poligon)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Chilean Guy19/3/13 9:20 PM

    Nope, it's just Chuck Testa

    ReplyDelete
  83. I would love...LOVE.. for one of the characters to be a screaming goat.

    ReplyDelete
  84. But your neglect of capital letters is not.

    ReplyDelete
  85. and as beffore ALL chars going to be quadrupedals (I mean ALL the 16)???

    ReplyDelete
  86. The Gioconda19/3/13 9:44 PM

Llama, alpaca, Guanaco or Vicuña for the first??
    give yours bets

    ReplyDelete
  87. the one in the middle is definitely AJ.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Okay, I'm intrigued. Care not that it is not My little pony, it looks and sounds awesome. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  89. So, I have a question: If you don't manage to get the Skullgirls engine for free... are you going to attempt to hold donations so you can get it yourselves anyway? I'm not sure how much that'll cost, but it certainly shouldn't cost 750k.

    ReplyDelete
  90. A_guy_who_likes_ponies19/3/13 10:16 PM

So out of curiosity, will there be mods released for this game? Because I have the strangest feeling that a "third party" is going to release a "mod" for this game that does some sprite swapping to put in other quadruped characters. I mean, people have released mods for plenty of other games that put ponies in them, it's obviously legal.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Think expecting 300k for Skull girls might be a bit unrealistic, we only raised about 250k for Brony doc and that was a pure Brony thing. I'd love to see you hit it, but it seems very unlikely. Hopefully something can still be worked out so you can use the engine. I'd rather donate directly to you then to roll the dice on the kick starter hoping that it will pick up speed.

These designs look fantastic though, very interested to see how this plays out.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Okay, let me say that all of those character concepts look amazing. I especially like the one on the far right (Pinkie = left, AppleJack = middle, Rarity = right?). Secondly, I think this may have been the best thing to ever happen to you guys if you decide to actually sell the game now that you can. Instead of making a fan project, you guys may just end up making really awesome fighting game that people play on consoles (AND PC!) over the world. Something unique that you can call your own. I love MLP, but I would love it even more if you guys turned into successful indie developers. Please keep at it, and I hope with all my heart you guys get a hold of the engine. It sounds great, and I'm sure it will make life that much easier.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Is this game going to have any bosses and DLC ?

    ReplyDelete
  94. SteamingBullet19/3/13 10:19 PM

I wasn't sure what to expect with the characters, but I didn't expect a llama, a cow I think, and... Idk what that is, Pikachu maybe? Te designs brought back the hype I first had for this game, while not as strong, I can't wait to actually see them! Who knows, it might even create a fandom of its own.

    ReplyDelete
  95. It's unlikely that the engine would cost them that much considering a license for UDK is around $200,000 now. The method for them obtaining it for free is just that: a method for obtaining it for free. The other methods won't be free, but probably won't require even near as much coin. If it did, they'd probably just stick with FM2K.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Lions! Lions Lions Lions! They all must be lions! Muauahahahaaa!

At least I keep trying to think the middle one is Ryu-Lion and first one is bouncy-critter.

    Needs Rapidash.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Are the 3 character concepts final or should we expect drastic changes over time?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hmm... I am sensing a theme here... Are all the characters for this new game going to be ungulates, or is that just a coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  99. ILikePizza55519/3/13 10:41 PM

    >A scripting system written in plain English, with move motions written in regular fighting game notation and a robust munge tool

And then they add modding support.

And then someone makes a Fighting is Magic mod.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I fail english but the 2nd one is a litte cow (cant remember how you call those) also... I WANNA MAIN THE LLAMA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  101. The alpaca better be the Rainbow-esque character, or I swear to god, I'll be all sorts of upset.

    ReplyDelete
  102. At this stage nobody is even close to final. They may stay close, they may differ; The ones above are concepts we're feeling comfortable with at the moment, and most likely the ones we're running with as a starter point.

    ReplyDelete
  103. oh wow! just by looking at that character designs... those shapes! i cant wait to play this game! llamas! cows! deers! like a dream come true!
hey! if you consider expanding out more i can design some plushie patterns for you ;)

    ReplyDelete
  104. Applecow -> Cowgirl. i c wut u did there

    ReplyDelete
  105. It's gonna be SO AWESOME (Rainbow Dash voice) :D

    ReplyDelete
  106. ImperfectStar0219/3/13 10:54 PM

    No, this is Patrick.

    ReplyDelete
  107. A Llama/alpaca (eating hands >.>), something else, and a dear with a bunny on it's head.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I really want to know the backstory of the deer and cow...and what would the llama's playstyle be? Hmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  109. That Doe on the side has my name written all over it. Is she fast? Is she a trapper? I don't care, I'll play anything that isn't the most played.

I can TELL she's gonna play weird, her design is so fast and spindly! I can't wait to see the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  110. my little quadrupedals, fighting is magic

    ReplyDelete
  111. The intrigue plane has soared to new heights, these designs look awesome even as silhouettes! As for what exactly they are...I'm calling it in order; Alpaca, Donkey, and finally Deer. Of course I could be completely wrong and it turns out they're all Nicolas Cage but whateves. Win some, lose some.

    ReplyDelete
  112. i know!!! i mean, have you ever played a fighting game where you can choose a llama to fight? i mean, how would it be the moveset for a llama?? super spit of death? ola k ase super combo? dude, the posibilities are endless o,0

    ReplyDelete
  113. Modding isn't as easy to do with fighting games. You might be able to do something simple like changing the colors but sprite swapping is a completely different matter. Different sprites means different hitboxes. Different hitboxes means the whole game needs to be calibrated and rebalanced. With the amount of work you need to do to mod this game, you could have made your own MLP fighting game entirely!

    ReplyDelete
  114. the lack of response from the team to this post makes me think that there might be bipedal animals in there.... like chimps or something :P

    ReplyDelete
  115. These designs look so awesome. I am ashamed to say I was initially a bit less interested in the game after the C&D, but after seeing these silhouettes, I can safely say that this game will be just as badass, if not more, than it was with ponies. Rock on, Mane 6.

    ReplyDelete
  116. we all wanted a llama to be in the game ^^

    ReplyDelete
  117. i see a lama a donky and i think a deer

    ReplyDelete
  118. I know it probably won't happen, but I would give you my firstborn child if this was officially supported on a Mac.

    ReplyDelete
  119. http://i.imgur.com/J6WX68B.png - that's how I picture third character o_O

    ReplyDelete
  120. 1) is a llama
    2) is most likely a mule/donkey
    3) Most likely a fawn

    ReplyDelete
  121. You obviously haven't watched the anime, buddy. =P

    ReplyDelete
  122. I see Pinkie, RD, and Rarity, but that's my brony side talking. I can't wait to see what these new quadrupeds are

    ReplyDelete
  123. Trickster Wolf19/3/13 11:33 PM

This is just AWFUL. As much as I want to support fellow bronies, why would anyone want to play an amateur-produced fighting game with random, undeveloped characters you've never seen before and have no connection to? I don't understand why you expect anyone to care that you're doing this new game except out of pity for what was lost.

We wanted to play the original game because we would get to play as our favorite characters from MLP. That is the ONLY reason anyone wanted the project. That's it. This is stupid. It's not a replacement. It's not even interesting. I appreciate that some MLP people have assisted but that doesn't make it useful if the characters are completely random. There are dozens of fighting games better than this one with characters that have development over sequels (and even movies and cartoons). This one just has no reason whatsoever for bronies to play it (except pity, again).

I wish, far too late, that Mane 6 had had the integrity and bravery to ignore the C&D and privately produce and release the original game through anonymous channels. But I guess that's not good enough, because they want to have their names up in lights more than they want to produce a quality product the fandom waited two years for only to see it get ripped away.

I'd even prefer Mane 6 disband entirely rather than spend their time trying to piece back together a shattered dream with duck tape and twine. Every time I see an update on this on ED I'll be depressed. And it's not related to MLP so why the heck is it on ED, anyway?

Hope that name recognition thing makes you guys feel good, at least. And I honestly do wish you the best of luck in making a great game, though I'm not sure how you can feel good about yourselves or what you're doing at this point.

However, I can't currently envision myself playing this thing without crying at the same time.

I'd have built an arcade cabinet for the other one. This is just so awful.

I apologize if any of that was offensive. I just think this 'new game' thing is nothing but salt rubbed directly in the wounds of MLP fans. Hasbro is mostly to blame for it, but Mane 6 is too.

  124. This is already looking very promising :D I really like the middle one!

    ReplyDelete
  125. I thought they look a little like llamas

    ReplyDelete
  126. Oh man, I can't get over the awesomeness. Alright I'm going to hazard a guess: on the left we have an alpaca Pinkie, in the middle... is that a buffalo calf Rarity?, and on the right... hmm... either a lamb or a fawn Fluttershy with a rabbit sitting on top. Once again, super excited. I really hope y'all get the license.

  127. Please for the love of god, do NOT hire Rina Chan for this game.

This is a new story arc, a new world and everything, and I really do not want to get infected with what can make the MLP fandom ungodly annoying at times, like memes or repeative jokes... which Rina Chan added when she made Brawl Taunts.

I am begging you, please hire other people besides her. Hell, Christa Vee is 10 times better then her.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I hope you feel better getting that off your chest. I find it amazing how you're capable of speaking for the whole community, rather than just yourself. Anyway, you can save us and yourself some misery by never visiting this site again. K, THX.

  130. "I wish, far too late, that Mane 6 had had the integrity and bravery to ignore the C&D and privately produce and release the original game through anonymous channels"

You mean the stupidity and carelessness to continue, clearly, because that would have gotten them sued. As in fucked-over-for-life sued. As in there's no way a fandom could help them then kind of sued.

"However, I can't currently envision myself playing this thing without crying at the same time."

I know you'd get bodied by everyone else who would be playing the game, but really, it's no reason to cry.

    Kindly fuck off now, thanks.

No, I'm speaking only for myself, Courtney; hence saying things like "I wish" and "I think" peppered throughout my post.

But thanks for the love and tolerance.

  134. It's not that big of a deal. In fact, with this, we can expand beyond just ponies and focus really on what made MLP great.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Julius Picott19/3/13 11:58 PM

Wow... You are stupid, simply put.

With ponies it's a quality game that should be supported but without them it's an amateur produced fighting game?

Please, don't be such a crybaby and get over yourself. You actually managed to annoy me, congratulations. <.<

    ReplyDelete
  136. Odd, but I'M NOT COUNTING IT OUT YET!!!! I STILL HAVE FAITH!!!!
(just imagine Phoenix Wright's theme playing in the background)

    ReplyDelete
  137. It isn't that big of a deal, I actually feel like the characters still keep the faith of the original show, but just expanding on the idea. It honestly feels like it has the soul of the show here.

    ReplyDelete
  138. You also peppered a couple of "We"s throughout your post and topped it off with a whole lot of SALT.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:02 AM

If the game is released anonymously and they can't trace the creators and workers, they can't sue anyone. It's likely that eventually someone will take the old code and do just that. Maybe it'll be me; maybe it'll be someone else. I don't know how many people are headed in that direction, though.

But apart from that, I appreciate that being as depressed and angry as I am to learn not only can't we have ponies, but not even OC ponies, so basically NOTHING from the fandom at all has anything to do with this game--that the universal response I'm getting is "fuck off" and "leave and never come back".

I think that illustrates just how long love and tolerance lasts when someone espouses a view you disagree with. Sad.

  142. Communities start with few people. Games start as an idea. Artists start out unknown. Character start out without fans. Is all i say. What i think you can make out for yourself if you wish.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I'm sure you get asked this all the time, but how are you still accepting artists to help out? I'd be ever so willing to assist in any way I could.

    ReplyDelete
  144. ...no? Maybe the game is still trying to have the soul of what made MLP good? Maybe... you don't really need ponies to show stuff like adventuring, new worlds, etc? Does it really have to focus on ponies to still have the same moral?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:05 AM

No, not "ponies". With *developed characters I love*, it's a game I want to play, because I want to play with those characters--pony or otherwise. With *undeveloped random characters*, I have no reason to play the game at all. It's just another amateur fighter game.

    ReplyDelete
  146. And if they think anyone did it, they can just sue them, and waste all of your money trying to defend yourself.

You're right, I'm not going to love and tolerate you when you bash something my friends are making, just because they aren't doing what you want. You're an idiot, plain and simple.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Did you try the what they had finished?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:06 AM

I appreciate your optimism but I don't understand how this game is connected to MLP in any way. What made MLP great was great writing that developed great characters over a space of three years. That's not going to be focused on.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Well, they can expand on the characters. It called "character development". It is what people do to define their characters and build on them.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I spot a Bunchy!

    ReplyDelete
  151. ...you're kidding, right? Are you saying that it can't be done again? Hell, if Faust did it once, who isn't to say she can't do it again?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:11 AM

Not really. They can have little bios or such, but it's not like having over 30 hours of expertly-written, animated backstory.

And again, there are other fighting games out there. This one is no more MLP-like than any other, and many of the others will be better all around.

If this had anything to do with MLP, even though I don't think I'll be able to play it from an emotional pov, I would nonetheless volunteer my services to help, donate money, etc. But it doesn't have anything to do with MLP. That's kind of the point.

When I see notices on ED about this all it does is reminds me of what could have been. It's depressing and it's not pony news anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  153. ...really? I mean, can't you see that it has the same story concepts as the original MLP, but you know... with a new storyline and a new world? Hell, I can give the "Bioshock Infinite" example to prove a point. New world, but same characteristics that made the series great.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:15 AM

Are you saying they're going to write and animate 65 episodes? Because that's where the character dev comes from. It doesn't come from Faust all by herself (and G4, while it owes a lot to her, is not "all Faust" either). It comes mainly from writers like Larson. and collaborative teams of people working hard over several years' time.

The thing that really sets FiM apart from most shows (even those for adults) is the depth of character development. If you think these are going to be developed characters on the magnitude of FiM...I can't even imagine how that could happen.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Amen. Everything has to start somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Can you please keep these comments to EQD then? We have nothing to do with what they post, and while I have a hard time believing you're serious in your comments, it's just antagonistic to the other commenters here. You don't get to hide behind 'love and tolerance' on our site while also telling us that we are nothing to do with 'your' community. You aren't adding anything to ours with that attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:17 AM

First, I apologize for my tone. I've been angry about this for a long time and haven't had a chance to express it anywhere appropriate.

Second, I didn't say you had nothing to do with the FiM community. I said YOUR GAME has nothing to do with MLP, the Hasbro property. That's what C&D means.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Not yet! If anything changes in the future we will be announcing it here :)

    ReplyDelete
  159. ...everyone has a chance to start somewhere. It is called telling a story. A story that is defined by characters. Instead of just saying that these people will fuck with everything, can you just maybe believe these people want to keep what they love about MLP, without getting into trouble?

Is it possible, maybe, to at least consider this a spinoff?

    ReplyDelete
  160. Hey, quick question I got to ask. How are you guys going to do voice acting roles?

    ReplyDelete
  161. Are you guys going to include any sort of mod support?

    ReplyDelete
  162. I bet my bottom dollar Rarity is going to be a goat. Then, she would have to resist the urge to eat her own designs.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:24 AM

Maybe, I don't know. I've played a lot of fighters and none of them have strong character development. There's sometimes a bio or a backstory when you beat the game with them, and that's nice and all, but it's not much.

I don't "feel" anything for the characters in fighting games. I love FiM and I feel for its characters, which is why I want to play games that involve them.

If this had happened in Japan, it wouldn't have been a problem. Or, if Hasbro had turned a blind eye, it wouldn't have been a problem. It happened, and I hate that it happened, and I realize that means I don't belong on this forum because I'm not all chipper and upbeat and happy about something I have no reason to look forward to. :(

This is just too much for me. I'm so disappointed in Hasbro, I just don't care anymore. I don't know what else to say.

    ReplyDelete
  164. They said they were keeping all of the character concepts from FiM and they were planning to have at least one non-pony character. So there might be one non-quadruped character

    ReplyDelete
  165. So... you aren't going to give this game a chance. And just you can not accept that this would be kinda considered a "spin-off"?

    ReplyDelete
  166. I'm totally going for the mule with the kerchief! I will delightedly roll my eyes if it's called Kick-Ass.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Trickster Wolf20/3/13 12:30 AM

Ok, that makes it pretty clear.

I apologize for everything I said in anger. I'm only upset because I was really looking forward to the years of work you had put into a project I desperately wanted to enjoy.

I hope you make a really kick-ass game, as I've said before. I really hope it goes well, and I hope it somehow stays connected to the pony subculture.

Although I feel terrible learning about the direction the game is going in now, that's my problem and nobody else can help me with that. I don't want to spread ill will or hurt feelings, I just want to feel like I'm not the only person in the world shedding tears over this.

As asked by several members and now a mod, I will leave the forum and not return. Feel free to delete my messages, or leave them up if you'd prefer they serve as a warning. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Are all your characters going to be real-life animals or are you open to fantasy creatures as well? Characters like Rainbow Dash and Twilight would still need flight and magic so they might still need to be a pegasus and unicorn. I would also love to see a Kirin China-girl character!

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'm guessing maybe they will focus on quadrupeds to make still have the MLP feel

    ReplyDelete
  170. OMG i know i wont be the only one to say how glad i am for you guys, we knew how hard you all worked for the first game, let me tell you, if the game ever releases for sale, i´ll buy myself a copy for ps3 and steam, love you guys and Lauren for doing this

    ReplyDelete
  171. looks like an aplacca o.O

    ReplyDelete
  172. The immediate flaw in your reasoning is,
"We wanted to play the original game because we would get to play as our
favorite characters from MLP. That is the ONLY reason anyone wanted the
    project. That's it."
This is, perhaps, partially true. The ponies got our attention on the project, but the character and creativity that has been exhibited by Mane6 in the game's production up until the fateful (expected and reasonable) C&D came down.
We want to see Mane6 produce something wonderful, whether it has ponies in or not, because with their creativity, ingenuity, and vision they have won our respect and enthusiasm.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Do you guys know if you will be having any male characters in your roster?

  175. purpletrauma20/3/13 12:57 AM

I am now expecting a better game than you were previously making.

You damn well better do a lot of world building and character development. Make something so great it becomes its own individual fandom. That's what I want from this new direction.. I mean.. seriously.. a Llama? What looks kinda like a donkey in the center? A freaking doe on the right!?

I expecting something so great that it'll have its own fandom. With the following you already have from the bronies, and the variety of species that will no doubt fit the spirit of the original game I'm seeing... all you need to do is have a good story mode and a lot of world building.. if you give the fans a world and characters deep enough to love, this'll be big.

    I'm sure of it.

    ReplyDelete
  176. The story of a fan made videogame that is enjoyed so much by the developers of the source material it get's made into a legitimate title... That's a story that's been told before.

The story of a fan made videogame that get's sued by the copyright owners, then re-established as a new game with the developer of the source material. Now that's interesting to me. It honestly makes me burn up with excitement.

More importantly, the my little pony franchise can only be developed so far. It is a girl's girl show. New projects give us more room to watch what the people responsible for our favorite show, what our favorite artists, can do, what they think about and want to tell us, and how they can communicate artistically.

It doesn't matter to me weather it's MLP or not. It's all just more beads on the necklace of accomplished and blossoming artists, one of which just so happens to be Lauren Faust. And if it's Faust's character designs, I've got enough reason to be here. But it just so happens to be a group of animators who have proven themselves by, well... The original game. And now they plan on using a fighting game engine that was built from the ground up into a successful competitive fighter?

I appreciate your passion for MLP, and respect that. But you say no one else really wants this game and supporters are drawn out of pity. So I've given my little testimony of a retort to that. My reason for supporting is because Mane6 is a respectable team and if they pull this off, taking a cease and desist on the chin only to come together with the series director and bring us something great, It'll be such a great inspiration story I'll be starry eyed for months.

...Not to mention a great fighter. I mean honestly this is now a fighting game community thing as well as an MLP community thing, and if you plan to spend this games lifespan insulting the animators, designers, and programmers who work here by calling their works unworthy of your time if it's not pony related...

...Then I'm sorry to say that what I thought was a community of people with passion and appreciation for artwork and cartooning may be a community of crazed fans of a little girls show.

  182. 725k? That's insane. I work in games middleware field, our team is making one of the big 3D multipurpose engines on the market, so I can estimate development costs for a 2D engine. 50K would be reasonable. 100K would be comfortable. 725K is just madness.

    Someone's using you, Mane6...

  183. Number 2 is clearly a donkey; See the long ears and short tail you , a cow would be the opposite (Unless it's a Brahman or something). On that note, finally there is hope that in the near future I will be able to play a fighting game and yell, "You Ass," as loud as I feel like without remorse. (PS: Apple Jackass is a cute pun.)

So what can we expect this project to be called now? Mane6 is a fine codename but, I'm worried, it still has a connection that Hasbro could get miffed over. Did they copyright that term yet?

Cloven Clash, Faust's Farm For Fighting Fauna, and A Petit Déjeuner are the first ones I could think of.
