You guys rock!
Well, turns out it took us a whole two (or is it three?) days to get over the initial shock, surprise and excitement at Skullgirls' Indiegogo campaign having reached the 725k mark (And beyond!), but we're back with a (mostly text) update of what's going on and what comes up next. But first, let us yet again thank everyone of you who donated, spread the word and supported (and still supports) us and the new game. We seriously can't say it enough, but you guys rock, and we can assure you we will -not- disappoint. We pushed the FM2K engine well beyond its limits for the previous project, and we intend to push the Z-Engine likewise (even though the Z-Engine's limits are considerably larger); We intend to give you guys the best game possible for this gift of an engine that you guys (and LabZero) have offered us.
Since we have gotten the engine (and some before) we have been getting questions about netplay and GGPO. We gave a short explanation of how that would work in a previous post, but we will expand it a bit more here.
GGPO is a bit of middleware that lets the game to be used multiplayer over a network. It was created by Tony Cannon (Co-founder of Shoryuken and EVO) and it's widely regarded as the best networking software for fighting games. SUPPORT for the GGPO library is included in the Z-Engine, but GGPO itself is not, as it is a separate license. Since having good network multiplayer is one of the priorities of our game, tech wise, and having acquired an engine to use, the GGPO license is now one of the first (if not the first) items in our "shopping" list, as it would allow for the best multiplayer experience.
Which brings us to the next thing: The "shopping" list.
Right now, the game is being developed by a staff consisting of 100% voluntaries not receiving any economical compensation for their work. Obviously, this can't continue forever if we're to make a -serious- game out of this. Begin with the fact that there's things to be acquired at certain points of the game's development that will probably require more money than we could cough up on our own. GGPO license, for starters... Software, hardware, website hosting and maintenance, technical expertise from people we can't ask to "volunteer" time for free, a gorillion other things if we ever wanted to port to consoles (not in the current plans, but technically doable with the Z-Engine)... Plus as before mentioned, the fact that apparently, game developers need to eat and have a roof over their heads (and somewhere to plug the computers into) to live and continue developing.
Making money, however, isn't as easy as it sounds. It ain't just opening a bag and asking you guys for your wallets while wearing clown masks and yelling "hold hands, this is an up stick"; and while we know some of you guys -would- actually throw the wallets in the bag (thank you!), a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign where you receive a bit of a reward for your patronage sounds like a better option, both for us and you, we think.
But again. Not as easy as it sounds, since there's a lot of things to consider. Budget necessary to complete the game, salaries to be paid to the people helping us make it, costs of software, hardware, licensing, development and stuff; pile on to that the kickstarter costs, reward making costs, the fact that we have to -formally- establish the development team as a company or partnership, which brings up lawyer costs for some stuff that need to be legalese-written, taxes to be paid to the government, and more of that kind of stuff. It's one of those things where having -less- than the money required (but still some money), is probably more troublesome than having no money at all.
So we need to figure all that out; Some of those things won't become clear until we have started experimenting a bit with the engine, measuring time and effort required, talking with the people who'll need to be paid, etcetera.
Cutting to the chase. We'd like this game to remain freeware, but somewhere in the future, there will need to be a point in which we make -at least- enough money to keep on developing with good quality and at a good pace without killing ourselves in the process. We're trying to figure out just -when- and how that will happen, and we'll let you know once it does.
But enough of what will need to be done. Let's move on to what is being done.
M6:The Return of the DevTeam
Mentioned above was the fact that our entire team is still volunteers; Let's make a team roster of who's who and what's up.
In the "Core" Development team, which includes game design and basic development, we're led by Omari Smith (Nappy), who is our be all and end all when it comes to the game's technical design. If it works like a charm, you can thank him. If it's broken, OP or just plain stupid, you can probably blame one of us bugging him to actually try stuff, and said stuff not working (as he most likely told us it wouldn't). Nappy is in charge of designing (With a bit of input from the rest of Core) and implementing the game's mechanics, as well as of doing character animation.
Next up we have Jay Wright (MonkeyJay), whose job title and description are formally "Developer in charge of Awesome (and some snark)". Jay does a bit of everything. Concept designing, art making, special FX & flair animation, character animation, smart-assing, etcetera. If it shines, sparkles, or just looks awesome (With no other words to describe it), Jay made it, or at least had a hand in the process. He also answers stuff around the web with his personal touch of Jayness.
Third there's Lucas Ellinghaus (Leedin). Leedin is mostly in charge of making the actual character models, basic animations and proclaiming everything needs minute pixel fixing to look correct. While three out of five people in DevCore work in the game's animation, Leedin's probably the one taking the most time doing stuff and making sure it looks -just- right.
Fourth we have Francisco Copado (Anukan). Anukan is in charge of everything interfaceish (Menus, HUD and GUI, website and related materials design... Stuff like that), as well as of updating and maintaining the collective front-face of the team on the web. (He's the one feeding the artificial construct we frankensteined to take charge of the site and twitter, and to answer most of the questions and posting the silly stuff to the interwebs).
Last, but far from least in Core, we have Lauren Faust (Lauren Faust). Lauren is the most recent addition to the team (and most probably the best); Lauren is responsible for the actual character design for the game, with some input from the rest of Core. You may know her for her work in Foster's home for Imaginary Friends, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Super Best Friends Forever and Galaxy Girls (which you should check out), for being in charge of the lizards at her house, or just for being SUPER AWESOME on the internet and real life.
New to the Team (Officially) is the Programming department, composed of Kenneth Leung (Pineapple) and Chris Robinson (Beta Carotene). Kenneth is the man secretly responsible for making the impossible possible in FM2K (Options menu, sound control...) with his freaky knowledge of
With us from the start are our three guys in the Music & Audio SFX department:
Stuart Ferguson (RC88) will be taking the role of Music Director for the game. You'll sure remember him as the creator of the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th character themes for the previous game, as well as the game's theme.
Working with him, Whitetail (3rd/4th Character themes for previous game) will be with the team as music composer. Yay!
Next up we have Ken McGill, who's also been with us for a long while, and will continue on his role on the team as Sound Designer for the new game =)
And on our "extended family", we have Oreo (Who, by the way, was the one responsible for some of the previous game's videos), Klisk Midori and Cam McFarlane, from the FGB, who will (once we get to it in a few months) be assisting us as our Lead QAs.
So there you have it!, That's our lineup for this game; Nonetheless, we expect to expand a bit in the coming months as some stuff starts being required.
...And since we're already on that topic, let us cover one of the frequently asked questions lately: Hiring new people.
Right now, we're not currently looking into immediate expansion, as we're still in the pre-production stage of the project. In a future, we might require people, particularly for art and voice acting (For the record, we don't yet know if we'll be requiring any male VAs, in case you were wondering), but right now, is far enough into the future that we're still fuzzy in the details. We're less likely to be requiring people in the areas of music and programming, but one never knows for certain.
If you're interested in joining our team, please keep an eye out in this site and in our twitter, as any announcements about open positions will be made in these places.
So all in all, progress is being made, and the project is slowly picking up speed. We're talking the details and legal bits with Mike Z and LabZero on using their engine; Lauren and Core are still working on character designs, and we expect to have something more to say in terms of programming and engine as soon as we get our hands on it. =)
Oh, and... You may have (or may have not) noticed that the site's look has been updated. It should load faster now, look better, and have lost all the holes and craters left over by the stuff that the C&D response had us strip from the previous version. It should work properly in Firefox, Opera and Chrome, and degrade gracefully in Internet Exploder (with a small exception in the top menu that will be fixed in a couple days, at most). Any bugs, please report via twitter to @Aleph42, and Anu will get on it. Please note that for the intents and purposes, Internet exploder is considered a "known bug" and irregularities on it shouldn't be reported.
Thank you!

Best of luck from here on, guys, I can't wait to see what's next!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually above this kind of behavior but...
ReplyDeleteSECOND!
internet exploder, oh you
ReplyDelete"Please note that for the intents and purposes, Internet exploder is considered a "known bug" and irregularities on it shouldn't be reported."
ReplyDeletePlease report the software the bug was found in:
Internet Explorer
What was the nature of the bug:
It's Internet Explorer
best of luck to ManeSix
ReplyDeleteHearing you guys talk about fighting game mechanics with Fighting is Magic is what really sparked my interest in the fighting game genre. You were also the ones that lead me to discover the awesomeness that is Skullgirls. Not only that, but seeing you all progressing and giving it your all has really inspired me to push myself in my own field of interest (music). So thank YOU guys for being awesome. No matter what, you've got my support.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to heck with internet exploder (this is now it's official name as far as I'm concerned).
Whatever happened to those testers in the dunge- I mean civil living spaces? They still with you?
ReplyDelete"degrade gracefully in Internet Exploder"
ReplyDeleteWell put, IE is nothing but a pain for devs and I really can't see much of a reason for anyone to use it...
Did anyone notice that Robo-Fortune's speech bubble is actually covering the face of one of the characters from the silhouette (the on the left that looks like a llama)?
ReplyDeletei am so excited that saying "i am going to explode into candy, then those individual candies are going to explode into rainbows and more candy" would be a horribly enormous understatement. due to a lack of better things to say and a desire to refrain from a rant (which i already kinda did and am still doing) is thank you for all that you have done, all this has restored my faith in humanity that was so utterly crushed at that C&D. keep up the good work, and I'm cheering for you guys (insert Fluttershy "woohoo" here)
ReplyDeleteYes, yes we did. ^^
ReplyDeleteInternet Exploder blurb, ahah... Well, I'll say this much, if money is what you need, I'll throw it at the screen when the time comes! Sadly, it's not a large pot of cash, but I'll donate what I can. Still as pumped, if not more pumped, than ever for your game to be! And welcome new members of Mane6!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you could just burst into treats
ReplyDeleteTo get money I would suggest merchandise and service. First and foremost your going to need physical copies of your game to sell. Then t-shirts which you can make on zazzle. Physical goodies such as action figures can be created on shapeways http://www.shapeways.com/ . And don't forget the plushies never forget the plushies. There are a lot of suggestions for websites here https://www.comic-rocket.com/news/2012/04/18/2012-year-comic-plushie/
ReplyDeleteANother thing would be charge for service. Like this http://www.erstwhiletales.com/membership-levels/ Give people behind the scenes look, early access,10 percent off etc. Another thing for people who donate would be a creative commons attribution 3.0 forum in which they could submit their characters and ideas that you can use.http://www.synfig.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=23&sid=4dcff2bd06808c477240dfa4c4da27fa
Our only testers for now (and for a while, considering we need a game they can test in the first place) are Cam, Klisk and Oreo. We had to let go all of the members of our QAV1 after the unfortunate breach-of-privacy incident.

ReplyDeleteBest of luck guys, you have my support.
ReplyDeletePlushies are a definite requirement. I WANT A LLAMA.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your venture and congrats on acquiring the Z engine.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your support as well for the SG IGG campaign as well.
Sooo... when do we get to know something about the actual game? Perhaps reveal one of the silhouettes in celebration of the Z-engine? Please :)
ReplyDeleteI just remembered that for this game, none of the sweet tracks made by RC88 or Whitetail will be usuable, which makes me sad. Also, I noticed the sublte showing of a featured character in the image with robo-fortune, which I'll assume is the party charger character. IT looks nice, though I can't wait to see it's face.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest question I have it how much stuff from Fighting is Magic going to be carried onto the new game, Characters, Background Art, and Music out of the question, is this going to be a turn of a new leaf?
I'm sorry to hear the issue with financing now, since 2 years of work and headache went down to ashes, you really need a sort of income. Sadly, I'll only be able to donate the little I have if any that's spare.
tl;dr: Good Luck and try to flaunt your origins a bit with they game. I personally don't want to see this completely devoid of Fighting is Magic, I played the leak so yeah, I fell in love with the movesets and 4-button layout.
P.S. please keep the 4 button layout if possible.
Thank you for your time.
We're most likely keeping mechanics and general feel. They're four legged characters and they're gonna fight like four legged characters.
ReplyDeleteControl scheme will also most likely keep in the 4 buttons, but the Z-Engine opens some possibilities for simplifying some of the inputs (the half circle + button presses, for example), so we'll be taking advantage of that.
*CLAPS* Bravo guys, this is only the begin you said it, and we now that everybody needs money to make everything. Dont worry you can reach beyond with the help of all of us. Mean Mane6 growing.
ReplyDeleteI gotta say the whole cease and desist thing that happen last month might have been the best thing that ever happen to you guys, I mean you got Lauren Faust to help in designing new original characters, getting the Z-Engine, and most of all great amount support from your fans. I, from the bottom of heart wish you luck on your future endeavors and possible success.
ReplyDeleteI know this project is no longer My Little Pony related, but are brony conventions still a possibility for you guys? As in showcasing gameplay and demos like what you did for Fighting is Magic at CG?
ReplyDeleteIf they'll have us, by all means! =)
ReplyDeleteObviously can't begin making promises and scheduling stuff this early in the project, but we'd totally love to.
Yes! I'd love to see them do that.
ReplyDeleteInternet Explorer IS the bug? lol I agree
ReplyDeleteI also hadn't heard of Skullgirls before, despite being a fighting game fan... and now it looks like it'll finally be the one that gets my roommate into them too! Hopefully he'll get his skills up to where we can be pretty well matched by the time Fighting is Magic goes gold.
ReplyDeleteOnce you have enough characters designed you should look into the viability of stuff like donation wallpapers, and murch such as T-shirs and coffie cups.
ReplyDeletea Kickstarter campaign should come in only after you have a good grasp on how much the whole project is going to cost (and what can you do with any extra cash), and make sure to nagotiate the prices of everyting before the cickstarter, you don't want people using your final donation as a leverage against you.
I love the Llama here, is soo cool, I want more fanart yay
ReplyDeletePD: If I can play the base (initial release) for free (freeware) I can be happy
*ahem* Yay!
ReplyDelete*checks wallet* My body is ready.
ReplyDeleteBut in all seriousness, I really think you guys should charge for the game.
Yeah sure, have it as one of the perks in whatever donation champain you plan on holding. "Get the full game at release" but other than that, PLEASE charge for it on steam or whatever, you guys really deserves compensation for all your hard work!
I'm slightly worried about the giant sum of money that kickstarter/indiegogo will take for their "services" but thats just me.
Best of luck! /)
"a gorillion other things if we ever wanted to port to consoles (not in the current plans, but technically doable with the Z-Engine)..."
ReplyDeleteRemember this when people start asking "is it on the 360 yet?" when you're a twentieth of the way through development. Some of the fans of DayZ are STILL doing that. :P
pls no male characters
ReplyDeleteI have a pretty decent sized figure collection of characters from games and anime I like, I would personally LOVE and buy literally any and all figures if they made them. lol.
ReplyDeleteAt least two. Gotta have variety :)
ReplyDeleteGame development is expensive. If you wanted to port the game to consoles I would recommend making the game a cheap $10. Sales can help you to afford the console devkits and game expansion. It's out there, but I just want to put it out there. A lot of people are willing to pay for your game as good as it is.
ReplyDeletebest luck to you guys, I'd donate any time to you
ReplyDeleteI am still jarateed at Hasbro. And still boycotting all products that they made/licensed. Hasbro ain't getting nothing from me!
ReplyDeleteIf it's on Steam, I'll buy it. Can't pay for it otherwise, but if it's on Steam, I'm buying it.
ReplyDeleteSimple as pie GOG, they have no DRM, and maybe you could base it on donations and distribute it for free like those who created Treasure Adventure did.
ReplyDeleteI play the leak pretty often *sorry* and I think the inputs are just fine. Maybe with a FEW knit picks, but otherwise it's perfect :D. Simplifying it would make the game feel too easy IMO.
ReplyDeleteYes, I found a bug. The hexagons aren't that awesome blue anymore.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Lauren Faust has a script for the story mode in mind for each character? What if Joss Wedon found it about this project and wanted to write it pro bono? Would you let him?
ReplyDeleteHey, I've just got one question that's been bothering me for a while. Even though the original project is now dead, do you still have the original source files, or were you required to toss those as well?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see how awesome this new game will be!
I wounder the same and if its dead and the leak is still floating about will the "dead progress be aloud to be added to the leaked version? Just wondering on that
DeleteI prefer a pay what you want business model. Also they could it free through merchandise sale and charging for service I have written a post about it. Another thing they should do is use as much free an open source software as possible that is Under GPL.
ReplyDeleteYay! ^.^
ReplyDeleteI really hope we get to see some fighting cats.
Great job though, wish I had money to give to you guys... ;_;
Oh yeah, are hexagons still going to be a theme for you guys?
ReplyDeleteMane6, now that you're taking a whole new direction with the game, will you disclose what the original roster for fighting is magic? I'm sure a lot of people are curious as to what other ponies were supposed to appear in the game.
ReplyDeleteIf RC88 and Whitetail are as awesome with the new music as they were with the old music, this is going to be easily one of the best-sounding fighting games ever. Just sayin'.
ReplyDelete"Pay what you want"
ReplyDeleteYou mean Freemium? Like what EA implemented to Real Racing 3 to destroy the fun of it and erase wallets for no good purpose? No thanks.
Okay, that game used the Freemium model as a pay-to-win model. Which at least Mane6 would NEVER think of doing.
No. Pay what you want means you pay anything and get the entire game, not necessarily any micro transactions. So no p2w.
DeleteWhen using joy2key with an arcade stick I found that the beta did not read upper-right directional inputs properly, like from walking right to jumping right. That kept me from playing it on a joystick.
ReplyDeleteOh, also... dat site design. If the site is any indication for how the game will look, well... my eyes are ready ;)
ReplyDeleteHere is what I wrote
ReplyDeleteTo get money I would suggest merchandise and service. First and foremost your going to need physical copies of your game to sell. Then t-shirts which you can make on zazzle. Hang on, wouldn't you guys be Mane 5 now that there are five of you?
ReplyDeleteBack when I was a major brony, I had come here for bronies.
ReplyDeleteNow when I have chilled out on the fandom quite a bit, I had to see what the gameplay felt like, as I am NO good with 2D fighters.
When I played the leaked beta, something clicked: this was the EASIEST, most FUN I've ever had playing a 2D fighter, because of the extremely accessible mechanics. Please, don't let this game play like Skullgirls, which I have tried and found it hard to play. The gameplay of your game is truly something and is keeping me invested. I've needed a game as fun and accessible to control as Dead or Alive. Keep that gameplay intact when developing on the new engine. I think the major thing about it was FRAMESKIP, which didn't require precise inputs just to make a combo.
Hey, if you guys need money at any given time during the making of this awesome game. I'll be there to donate. :) I look forward to seeing your work in the near future and also thanks for the sneek peek of one of the characters. Even if we didn't see that silly face hiding under the speech bubble it was better then nothing. :P
ReplyDeleteWe got to have at least 1 or 2... I mean we got Spike in MLP for example.
ReplyDeleteOne of the 3 that we seen COULD BE a male... Or they could be all male or all female. I don't mind which, I'm really excited to what they really look like either way. I hope the dev team give us a quick spoiler soon. :)
Hint: I think one of the dev said the right one is a "she". >_>
Have you only got the "Home" page done so far, because the other links ("the game", "the devteam" and "faq") are only text at the moment?
ReplyDeleteJust asking...
Once you hit the Crowdfunding point, please, please, PLEASE, don't tease with stretch goals, specially new characters. It makes me feel we get an unfinished product when they aren't met.
ReplyDeleteThat might be a problem with joy2key, some players on the server use an arcade stick as their controller of choice and they get by just fine.
ReplyDeleteYay! I am soo glad to hear things are going well for you guys. I look forward to all the updates that I will see for the new game.
ReplyDeleteI tested the inputs on joy2key (they highlight yellow when they are read) and outside the game upper-right works perfectly. I'm using the Hori Fighstick Mini 3 which has no official software support. Upper-left or jumping leftwards control works perfectly fine. You have to remember that the leaked beta was FULL of bugs. Why? It was unfinished, duh! :)
ReplyDeleteSo when can we expect to see a forum?
ReplyDeleteI really hope so! I love hexagons n_n
ReplyDeleteWell...since you no longer have to worry about Hasbro, you should develop this as a paid game.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, you can go the Kickstarter route, or simply ask for money. I would donate either way.
The only thing you need to make sure of is that you properly budget out what you would need before you go to Kickstarter. Quite a few companies seriously underestimate what they would actually need when they ask for money on Kickstarter. You'll need at least several hundred thousand to do it right, if not a million. You might want to try talking to other small companies who have made fighting games professionally or someone like Chris Roberts, to get an idea of what you would need.
It seems doubtful to stray from hooved species. Though I haven't heard anyone actually say no about paws. I was actually just thinking how a lion cub character trying to be ferocious only ends up being the most cute character, or a brash wolf pup...they are predators so it would make sense that they would be fighting in the first place...ah who am I kidding, I am a writer, I just like to think of character ideas u___u. As a more likely suggestion though, what about a giraffe? Those purple tongues are neat, could be a possible long-range hitter, though if dodged, its attacks would also leave it easily open for counters. Could be neat.
ReplyDeleteThat's sexist! Sort of. I would like to see a semi even split really for variety, but meh, not like it would affect my decision to buy it either way. Also, it was confirmed before the one on the far right was female and if you read carefully they actually just hinted that all three of the current ones are female, lol. "For the record, we don't yet know if we'll be requiring any male VAs, in case you were wondering"
ReplyDeleteFelt like this would be appropriate:
ReplyDeletehttp://distractionware.com/games/flash/hexagon/
Or just a donate button on the site. Its not 'in your face' but its still there for anyone who wants to help out. Let it trickle in through that and then when it comes time for big spending, figure out what more is needed from there.
ReplyDeleteI have a question if the characters are 4 legged, What about the characters that fly will they be 4 legged?
ReplyDeleteSo Stoked to Hear about this. I'm glad that you guys recovered so well and with such Grace. I huge amount of respect to all of you and a good level of groveling in the presence of The Cartoon God-Queen Faust. I'm really looking forward to all that you guys offer. I have found one issue is that I have been trying to avoid the time murderer Twitter but you have now shown me that Lady Faust has one and so I spent a good hour reading back tweets before reading the rest of this message.
ReplyDeleteThe way things are going, I'm almost inclined to say the C&D was the best damn thing for this game. Sure, it lost the thing that got the majority of us interested (IE, the Ponies), but now it has a chance to be something much bigger in the vast world of fighting games. From the showings last year (and that unfortunate leak), Mane6 already showed they know how to make a good fighting game. Now with both Lauren Faust's involvement and the recent acquisition of the Z-Engine (which we already know absolutely curb stomps FM2K), this game has the chance to be even better than the original Fighting is Magic. And I, for one, can't WAIT to see where things go from here.
ReplyDeleteHAAAY FIVE!!!)))
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. I support you guys all the way.
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously: if you ever get the chance to turn this into a big, successful video game company, do it. I wanna see you guys get huge. I want everyone to know who you are, both inside and outside the various fandoms that are following you currently.
I mean really, you already have tons of followers, all you need to do is sell Alpaca t-shirts and stuff and BAM! you're millionaires.
Awesome! Looking forward to the new game :)
ReplyDeleteI for one welcome our Z-Engine overlords.
ReplyDeleteEven when this is gonna be a fighting game, It theres gonna be some kind of storyline? and with that, you will need help of maybe writter for that?
ReplyDeletePlease. PLEASE just read the fine print.
ReplyDelete"...and while we know some of you guys -would- actually throw the wallets in the bag (thank you!), a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign where you receive a bit of a reward for your patronage sounds like a better option, both for us and you, we think."
I'm gonna go off-topic here for an idea: Put in Lauren's Ponysona as either the final boss of the game or as a bonus boss in the game. Since she isn't an official My Little Pony character, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Just simply remove the cutie mark so that it no longer associates with MLP.
ReplyDeleteSo, here's a question you've probably been asked a lot. Since the original Fighting is Magic is dead, who were all the characters that you had planned?
ReplyDeletePlease, just... don't see that happening.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to have another (original) Faust persona for this game, background or not.
You win. I can't beat it XP
ReplyDeleteWhy would the tracks be unusuable? Because they take minor elements from the show?
ReplyDeleteI REALLY hope this gets a console release, because I REFUSE to use a keyboard to play this game. I've tried many programs to run my joystick on the computer but none have been perfect (and perfect control is NECESSARY in fighting games). I have a Hori Fighting Stick Mini 3.
ReplyDeleteIts *possible* that there could be one. We do not know for certain yet as there are countless legal and technological issues involved with that. The primary candidate for trouble on that front could be licensing.
ReplyDeleteAgain though, we'll be looking into this thoroughly before making decisions.I myself though am all for it
*squee*
I know it's very early on to ask this question, but this time around will the possibility of open beta testing be, uhm, possible? I'm not quite sure if your positions are changed because of the situation, but I thought I'd ask.
ReplyDeleteYAAAAAAHOOO!
ReplyDeleteI'm not entirely sure if "open beta testing" was the right name for what you're asking about. The leak happened because of open *alpha* testing, which is where you test the game with small groups of tightly monitored teams which are usually employed by the developers (or at least associated with them).
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm not personally involved in the decision process for that, I can almost guarantee a definite "no". Open *beta* testing on the other hand is an extremely standard practice, and almost necessary among indies that cannot hire large teams of internal testers. That is indeed very likely.
GOOOOOOOGLE
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't think of that. Giraffes are the perfect candidates for this kind of fighting game. Why not throw in a bunch of different animals?
ReplyDeleteGuess we'll have to wait and see.
it's possible (I'd even argue 'likely') that this new engine will offer native controller support on PC, so you won't have to use xpadder or similar
ReplyDelete@Mane6
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys will include a wolf in your character selection. :)
So is the game going to be free download, or are we going to have to pay money to get the game?
ReplyDeleteMETAAACRAAALER!
ReplyDeleteI'm almost certainly positively convinced without a doubt with sure knowledge, that they intend on keeping the game free to play for everyone.
ReplyDeleteMaking a "freely shared" game was one of Lauren Faust's goals when she joined the project. It wouldn't be wise to change that at this point.
ReplyDeleteYES! Finally!
ReplyDeleteOr at least a wolf in sheep's clothing if you ABSOLUTELY have to go with that kind of thing.
People have asked before, and Mane6 can't answer. This sucks, but sorry.
ReplyDeleteNot sure yet. From the post:
ReplyDelete"We'd like this game to remain freeware, but somewhere in the future, there will need to be a point in which we make -at least- enough money to keep on developing with good quality and at a good pace without killing ourselves in the process. We're trying to figure out just -when- and how that will happen, and we'll let you know once it does."
The ttuth is that most of us are cool with it but a few of us are still uncomfortable with releasing the roster. I won't name names though ;) Sorry there isn't a more interesting answer!
ReplyDeleteGuys, just sell the game.
ReplyDeleteNobody'll be mad at you!
Uhhh, I imagine a wolf in sheep's 'clothing' could be much, much darker than just a plain wolf.
ReplyDeleteaaaaaaaaaaand now I can't stop thinking about Kaku from One Piece. PASTA MACHINE
ReplyDeleteDUCKDUCKGOOOOOOOOO
ReplyDeleteAditionally the no DRM can make the project elegible for other thinks like the Humble Bundle
ReplyDeleteI have a question do as already cabaron meet nesesarios asta funds more that means my little pony magic is fighting to continue or will be completely different?
ReplyDeleteI know.
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys keep the name Fighting is Magic. I didn't see any comment on whether there would be a name change or not, but it's too good to go.
ReplyDeleteHi Mane6,
ReplyDeleteLooking at your possible characters, have you considered selling plushies of the characters after the release of the game?
(I would totally buy an Alpaca >w<!!) err.. who-who said that?
Wat.
ReplyDeleteIve played enough fighting games to pretty accurately guess at this game's story.
ReplyDeleteAnimals are mad at each other so they fight.
Hope this helps.
So what will the genre be for this new series? Will it retain the fantasy elements or will it be science fiction?
ReplyDeletecant wait for position openings. got my portfolio ready and now that snowdrop is out i got a lot of free time.
ReplyDeleteHave you signed Mike's NDA yet?
ReplyDeleteGot the engine in your hands?
Yeah, I've got some questions of my own
ReplyDeleteSome take more than 'minor' elements, unfortunately. Take the theme to RD for example. the chorus was pulled from RD's verse in the 'Gala' song. the entire backbone of AJ's theme was based on her whole verse in 'winter wrapup'. Sad to say, but 'minor' is not the word you're looking for.
ReplyDeleteEither way, do we -really- want to give Hasbro another reason to bust down our door?
I hope it has a mix or character personalities and different genre levels. ^_^
ReplyDeleteFor one thing you would need to purchase devkits and, as you say, licensing. That's why I would recommend putting a price (even a small one like $10) on the game when released on PC.
ReplyDeleteHow often do you guys meet Lauren Faust?
ReplyDeleteJust wondered...
While Id assume it wouldnt make much sense to use all your already recorded voices for this new game, what about keeping the old music? Like, as a toggleable option or a randomly occuring easter egg? Theres nothing specifically MLP about them, they just sound like good fighting game themes.
ReplyDeleteAnother possibility is that an evil animal has organised a fighting tournament in order to gather the best animal fighters in the world into one place and steal all their fighting powers for him(her)self or profit.
ReplyDeleteExploDer
ReplyDeleteRemember, y'all! Squigly is voiced by Lauren Landa, so if Panzerfaust makes it in, you guys get to have team "Lauren Faust"! :D
ReplyDeleteIf you guys need mony keep in mind that many people, myself included, would pay money for a Console Version for sure
ReplyDeleteNow you SAY you don't know if you'll be requiring male VAs at this time. But in the event that you decide to give it some thought, I do love being a fighting game announcer and could definitely do something distinct from but equally as fun as my announcer work for Skullgirls. If auditions do happen to pop up for a male announcer role, I would love to participate.
ReplyDeleteThat would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteIt might be a little too close. We'll probably err on the side of caution since we REALLY can't be bothered dealing with any legal problems this time around :)
ReplyDeleteCompletely new. Completely different.
ReplyDeleteNot yet! Since we aren't a company and cant very easily represent everyone on the team legally, we are kinda having to sort out everyone signing the nda separately just in case. It's taking a while (also easter weekend)
ReplyDeleteOnce a week, on New Zealand Mondays.
ReplyDeleteOr Magic Alpaca (TM) is ordered by the great King to move to Alpacaville to make some friends.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer It to be a wolf without any sheep's clothing. lol
ReplyDeleteWhat have you taught about my ideas to make money.I have given you alot. Also I have another idea to make money put all your assets under

@Mane6,
ReplyDeleteWill the characters planned right now go through several retcons
before being revealed in the game?,
Could any of the characters event be replaced
before the character selection is final? :?
Right now I am thinking mystical forest/kingdom sort of theme, but with just three -potential- character outlines, there isn't a lot to go by, lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat language[s] was that supposed to be in?
ReplyDeleteThat would never work, she would outshine all of the other characters.
ReplyDeleteWill there even be a flying character anymore? With Pegasus and Alicorn down...what other four legged flying creatures are there? Dragons, Manticore, Chimera...all I can think of off the top of my head. And only one of those is hooved, or...semi hooved.
ReplyDeleteThat's actually been pretty awkward for my conversations. I keep trying to tell my friends about this. I have come to realize that its hard to talk about something that has no name, lol.
ReplyDeleteActually, you could easily alter the spots on a giraffe into the hexagonal theme as well, lol
ReplyDeleteA subtle dialect of Dolanese, I believe
ReplyDeleteNew Fighting is Magic is fine. Or just mane6's new game, but we might change company name too when we actually start a company.. argh. Sorry :(
ReplyDeleteWe figure a name will appear once we start getting into the characters personalities and setting. Hopefully..
Web Developers, 2008: "I wish I didn't have to design this for IE, but that's what everyone uses."
ReplyDeleteUsers, 2008: "I wish I didn't have to view this in IE, but that's the only browser it was designed for."
Rest in pieces, Internet Exploder. Your death was inevitable.
All hail Chrome and Firefox... and other browsers which actually use standard HTML instead of their own butchered dialect.
(Guess I should actually say something on-topic now. If you make plushies, I will buy one. Or several.)
Hmm... you should call yourselves Fausticorp.
ReplyDeleteYes she's the newest member to the group, but still. Maybe this is just me, but if I were on a team that included Lauren Faust and we had to choose a company name, that's what I would vote for.
Besides, it has a nice ring to it.
(Then again, this is coming from the guy who has "Faustian" listed as his religion on Facebook, so of course I'm gonna think that. But whatever, just throwing it out there.)
Internet Explorer has moved to the status of Metabrowser.
ReplyDeleteIts a browser that lets you browse for browsers.
Bit too early to say specifics, but what I can say is that I've seen the initial background sketches and they are beautiful, better than the FiM backgrounds to me personally.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an art guy though :3
Some might, or all might, or non might!. We are still in concept stage for them, which is why we only showed silhouettes :)
ReplyDeleteWorld-building has not started yet. Character concept stuff first! So honestly.. it could be anything! Whatever it is we'll try to keep Lauren's style of the characters in mind for the rest of the world too. We want it all to be cohesive.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't much more info to give yet. Pre-production can take a good chunk of time (it's also really exciting because ideas flow around all over the place).
Well.. stretch goals aren't just tricks to get people to pay more money. It's not a tease. We will need more money to produce more stuff because it takes more time to produce more stuff.
ReplyDeleteLet me guess, you feel like nobody understands you and confined by society...
ReplyDelete:\
If you plan to keep it 4 button, would you also consider using the remaining free ones as "alternate block"?
ReplyDeleteI figure by default, block will be the traditional 'move away' thing, but some of us just prefer a dedicated key.
Well depends what you mean.. A button for block by itself we won't be doing, since that would change a lot more than you might realise in terms of how the game would play. But there MAY be a way to map your own buttons to 'back'. I do not know for sure yet if that's possible.
ReplyDeleteI am curious to where you guys will take your series.
ReplyDeleteSince you have "alpacas" and "llamas", my guess is your team and Faust are going for something ancient American aka the mayan aztec and inca.
Well I think its a brilliant and exiting idea.
Implying a wolf pup isn't cute. I had to give my dog away when I was young because it was half wolf, which was apparently illegal to have in the city.
ReplyDelete=o Oh my wall o' text
ReplyDeletechrome - menu still not fixed
ReplyDeleteor it is broken everywhere?
The home button works, but the others are not operational at this time
ReplyDeleteHey, glad to see you guys are on your way again. I wish you well, and can't wait to see what you guys have in mind. Incidentally, I saw this earlier and thought about you guys. If you have any character who is musically inclined, the song used here could be of some inspiration. =)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFjEintbDXc
I have been thinking, I have seen several people ask for wolves, so how about start the game off being told by the selected character [this automatically explains differences when selecting different characters for the story, because obviously each one is going to 'tell the story' with themselves as the hero]. Have the story about escorting an elder animal, and the 'villains' a wolfpack. The remaining main characters would face you, having made deals with the wolves to help capture you for their own safety but after meeting you in battle, decide to give it up and help you in spite of the danger. Once you get to the end, the Alpha wolf can be the boss, and once defeated, the elder gets to where he wanted to go. You realize though, that the wolf pack is starving and were fighting to keep themselves alive, so its you or them. And queue tearjerker ending when the elder thanks you for bringing him there, but tells you he hasn't the strength to return with you, and knew all along, as he offers himself to the wolfpack. After credits, show scene talking with the Alpha wolf, with him saying hes relocating his pack now that there healthy enough, because the 'meat in these woods is too tough for his tastes', as a complement for defeating him before. The end.
ReplyDelete....I'm thinking about this way more than I probably should be.
Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger.
ReplyDeleteThey will not share those. The answers I have been getting are kinda ambiguous especially when I asked them about releasing the old stuff posthumously (they answered "dunno")
ReplyDeleteIf you come, we will support. You know that.
ReplyDeleteI talked to a ton of people at BAP while sitting the BfG table, playing ChefMkt's combo vids on my lappy to lure con-goers into being made aware of/supporting charity efforts. A solid number not only knew what they were watching, but knew what had happened and were still excited for you what you guys are doing next.
Just don't ever change your name. You'll always need a callback to what got it all started in the first place. ^_^
So, is the game going to have independent sound controls for BGM and SFX this time around, now that you've got a better engine?
ReplyDeleteI read many peoples complaining about character building and history
ReplyDeleteand I tink that if you can probide a Comic or any like this or any way for know best those new characters probably they goig to have less peoples complainig about it and more know how the character interact one and other
ad not forget that this can give material for fanart and fanfics expanding they to new horizonts thatk to the comic/whatever that give material to artis that give fanart and fanfic for a new public of peoples
what you think about this??
I appreciate your desire to keep this game free, but have you really seriously considered selling it? I feel like there is almost no reason not to. I suppose there could be some worry of losing some of the fanbase. You could go the micro-transaction route and sell some stuff that way. At very least, having a Kickstarter so those of us that want to "buy" the game can would be pretty nifty. A basic reward of early alpha/beta access would be pretty legit. I'm just super excited for this game and want it to be very successful! It's basically the only fighting game I'm willing to play (I very much appreciate that it's staying true to the light-hearted, appropriate nature of MLP), so I'm going to throw as much support behind this thing as possible.
ReplyDeleteThe last game did too, in the end. "Kenneth is the man secretly responsible for making the impossible possible in FM2K (Options menu, sound control...)"
ReplyDeleteWe have loads of ideas for introducing people to the characters personalities. It's been one of our goals since day one :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the support and reassurance! We have seriously considered thinking about seriously considering it. At the moment, we just want to start working on it.
ReplyDeleteNot that you guys nee ideas, I mean, at this point its pretty much all ideas and potential. But for possible animals, have you considered giraffe, kirin, and/or kelpie? Kirin are basically a semi-reptilian looking asian equal of a Unicorn, with scaled backs and a single antler instead of a single horn. I thought a Kirin named Karen would make a cute sort of loner character, travelling around to avoid hurting others with lightning [their horns attract lightning]. This would also make a good replacement for RainbowDash, who, also had a lightning strike attack if I remember correctly. Kelpie are semi-demonic water horse from highland mythos, with manes and tails of seaweed and coral. Could give her a name like Kelly and a cute personality to sort of counterbalance the real mythos perspective, and it could make a nice replacement for Rarity, replacing seashells and/or fish, with seashells. If you really wanted, could even give her a horn by placing a corkscrew-shelled hermit crab on her forehead, lol. And Giraffe, well...I just think there cool.
ReplyDeleteI do have one question though, and I don't mean to sound as if I think this question is crucial, but will it still feature ponies? I mean, that was the reason you guys made fighting is magic in the first place. I saw the sneak peek of the characters you posted, it was awesome to think that you weren't limiting yourselves to ponies, but to not have ponies at all would be... I dunno.... just feel like it would be an awful shame is all. If you guys cant its alright and understandable what with the whole Hasbro ordeal and all, but still, will it still mainly revolve around ponies?
ReplyDeleteI don't mean that it MUST have ponies, but I just feel like its a huge change in the nature of the game without them. Still, I know whatever game you're making, pony or not, is gonna be epic, and whether or not there will be ponies is definitely not make me any less supportive of this project.
No, but thank you for guessing. lol
ReplyDeleteThat would be an awesome way to support the game! I support this idea. :D
ReplyDeleteGod Bless guys. :)
ReplyDeleteNope. Nothing MLP related whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteDang, not even ponies in general? Thats a shame. Que sera sera, I know this new game is still gonna be fantastic nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteWhatever. In a year, this will be just as forgotten as every other fan-made... everything on the net.
ReplyDeleteWell that's just too bad for games based on something. This, however, is going to be a completely new universe/game setting and involve characters that never existed before, so I don't understand why you're calling it something "fan-made". "Indie" would be a much more reasonable title, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI'm certain that if you guys even released the game as a "name your own price" rather than just a free download you'd get quite a bit of monetary support (I know I'd chip in). The fanbase y'all have built loves you!
ReplyDeleteI guess spriting and animations will be mod-friendly for those who want to make some original fighters, right? Riiight? *wink wink, nudge nudge*
ReplyDeleteLike counterstrike.
ReplyDeleteSince Hasbro doesn't own the copyright on pegasi in general they -could- potentially still have a pegasus character as long as it doesn't have a cutie mark or overly resemble one of the show's characters... though it's doubtful they'll even include horse-related characters for fear of stirring up legal issues.
ReplyDeleteAlso, manticores don't have wings, though there's also griffons and hippogriffs, the latter of which are hoofed.
Depends on the version of the mythos, manticore have been known to have bat like wings. Hippogriff could work, Griphons...eeeh...there was one in MLP if you recall. There are other factors to take into account for a type of character like this though to. Firstly, if it can fly, does it matter how many legs it has? Secondly, magic has been known to have the effect of forgoing logic, as in, allowing something that doesn't even have wings to fly. Wasn't Rainbow the only one who could fly in their old game? And she wasn't even entirely done...well, nothing technically was I guess, but, yea. Who knows, everything is just guesswork atm, there is next to little information we[and they themselves] have that is solid, and what is solid, can and will easily change as they try to solidify their plans for other things. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteomg its really gonna be alpacas <3<3<3
ReplyDeleteSince this is going to be non-pony based, I really hope there will be a console release of this.
ReplyDeleteOr the entire DOTA genre...
ReplyDeleteI have never understood it when fans of a soccer team screams "WE WON WE WON!" when their team wins. I'm just like "I didn't see you guys play.."
ReplyDeleteAfter this engine campaign, I'm starting to see what they mean. I chipped in a little bit to help out, just like they do when they buy team t shirts etc and even if I hardly did anything to help the game get their engine it still feels like WE won as a community.
So I guess I'm finally starting to understand why they say "we won!"
I gave you an idea about creative commons but that comment didn't get published.
ReplyDeleteWell the other thing is, this project isn't tagged to any major corporation or soulless company, the only thing its connected to is its own team, and its community and fans. So it is sort of us, the fans, to help lift these guys up with our support and help them make it all it can be. So, every one person here is helping it in their own way. We get to play the game one day, we get to see what our help, helped to make. So in a way, it is a victory for everyone here.
ReplyDeleteI have question about a possible aspect of the game, as in, will there be a story (mode)? Has the team come up with any context that these bouncy animals beat each other into unconsciousness?
ReplyDeleteNot that I need it. Was just curious.
Never mind, realized question was too soon. Everything is still in the works.
ReplyDeleteHello a couple of friends and are I are doing a podcast based around news in culture and the fandom and a discussion about Mane6's bounce-back after the unfortunate C&D would make for a great conversation piece. I have a few questions about the new game. If any of these questions are classified or otherwise I understand if you choose not to answer. Are the fighting styles gonna be similar to that of the ponies? Now that you're no longer dealing with ponies, are background designs, character color schemes, and dialogue gonna be a less pony-esque? Don't get me wrong I love everything about MLP. But It's kinda tough making ponies look bad-ass to outsiders or those unaware of the fandom. How many characters are we gonna be seeing during the initial release. Are you gonna be using Fighting is Magic as a base? Or are you completly starting from scratch? How long is it before we see final character designs? Will it have online play capabilities The biggest question, what is the upcoming game gonna be called?
ReplyDeleteindeed ^^
ReplyDeleteAll these questions can be answered with a solid: lolidunno
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of speculation and some strong leads, but nothing we can answer for certain.
Fighting styles? Will be similar. Because we already kinda thought out a whole set of moves for 6 (more actually, but 6 solid ones that were mostly done) characters, we're going to use those moves as a base for the new characters in the new game.
ReplyDeleteLess ponyesque? Well.. yes, but Lauren Faust is still designing the characters, so they will still be fun and colourful and cute (plus that was kinda the appeal in the first place, cute animals + full-fledged fighting game), BUT of course now we have freedom to do pretty much anything, it would be a shame not to explore some things that ponies wouldn't allow us to. So maybe it's more real colours, maybe it's not. Maybe it's more gritty, maybe it's not. Maybe they swear constantly! Although we are not going to go gory/violent, I can say that PRETTY safely (no fatalities).
How many characters? Six planned (based on old six) but who knows. It's not set in stone yet. We had a lot of ideas from last game that never came out. If the game ends up going to funding, we'll definitely factor in how much more it would cost to make extra characters (like Skullgirls did).
Fighting is Magic as base? Not sure what you mean exactly, but the gameplay style will be similar, but also as said above, it's our chance to really branch out and push stuff. In terms of all created assets that aren't movesets and mechanics, it's pretty much starting from scratch.
How long till final characters designs? When we're happy with them! We really want to show you guys what we end up with, and we're getting there! Once we start making this thing, we can't very well go back easily, so we want to make sure the characters are as done as we can before we show you guys their looks and personality and who they are. Sorry that doesn't contain a timeframe yet!
Online is something we would be crazy to ignore. In fact it's almost necessary. On top of that, GGPO (explained in post) is pretty much necessary, which costs money. So that will be something we work out down the track. Basically, yes it will be online even if we have to sell our stamp collections to get GGPO.
What's it gonna be called? LOTS of ideas, but at the same time, NO idea. We figure the name will appear magically out of our brains somehow when we know more about the characters and they world they fight in! We want it to be something that someone could call out at EVO on the mainstage without feeling embarrassed. Also we'd like it to be able to get shortened to something catchy. And have a cool three letter acronym. And not sound like it was thought up by Bill and Ted. And be really clever... Is that too much to ask.
Nothing solid, but we definitely want a single player mode! We just don't know who the characters really are or where the story is set yet! Characters first so we can start animating, then story will come from that.
ReplyDeleteLeague of Legends for example.
ReplyDelete
